Basic Function

Interested in learning about how the private sector partners with governments to proactively protect the nation's critical infrastructure as part of the overall homeland security strategy? Or, how your criminal justice or international relations skills can be applied within a multinational corporation to manage multiple, complex business security risks, ranging from crisis management, asset protection, and protective intelligence, to supply chain security, physical security, and fraud, due diligence, and cyber-crime investigations as a means of creating real value for shareholders?

If so, then LyondellBasell, a $52 billion petrochemical company headquartered in Houston, Texas with refinery and manufacturing operations in 17 countries has one for-credit, paid internship opportunity for upper level undergraduate, as well as graduate students, who would like to learn more about how security related risk is managed within a leading global corporation.

Roles & Responsibilities

What you will learn during the Internship



  • How complex security risk assessments of high value corporate facilities, operations, and assets are conducted, and how those assessments support national homeland security strategies.
  • How open-source intelligence is collected, evaluated, and analyzed to develop threat assessments and comprehensive risk forecasts, which in turn serve as the foundation for building risk-based global security programs within the company.
  • How corporate investigations are conducted in various international legal jurisdictions and how the lessons learned from investigations can be extracted and applied to support global business goals and objectives.
  • How corporate crisis management and business continuity programs are customized to corporate / industry risk profiles so as to minimize security and financial risk while directly supporting global business operations.
  • How proactive, intelligence-based supply chain security and asset protection programs are integrated into business models to enable operations within high-risk international markets.
  • How multi-dimensional global security risk management strategies are developed and then implemented in a manner that adds quantifiable value to business operations.


LyondellBasell is committed to providing interns with a broad-based experience so they understand the vital strategic and tactical roles of the corporate global security department within today's multinational corporation. In addition, interns will be exposed to the dynamic, challenging and personally rewarding career opportunities within the Petro-chemical industry for talented corporate security professionals.

Min. Qualifications

  • Upper level undergraduate or graduate student(s) who is majoring in Criminal Justice, Criminology, Global Security, International Relations/Global Affairs, or Security Management and who has at least one (1) recommendation from a university faculty member.
  • Able to work up to 40 hoursper week at our Downtown Houston location (remote options available as well).
  • Have a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (3.5 or above is preferred).
  • Be able to pass a pre-employment background investigation and drug test.
  • Willing to sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement relating to LyondellBasell confidential and proprietary information.
  • Successfully complete a virtual or on-site interview for the intern position at our Downtown Houston location.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without requiring sponsorship for employment visa status.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Interest in understanding how corporations utilize the skills of a security and/or criminal justice professional to create value for their shareholders
  • Strong work ethic in a professional corporate setting
  • Excellent communicator with good writing and presentation skills
  • Excellent Critical Thinking, Research, and Analysis skills
  • Interest in international cultures, geo-political, and economic issues that impact the security environment
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products including Word, Power Point, Excel, Access, and Outlook
  • Excellent prioritization and time management skills
