About the role:

We are seeking a talented and motivated Research Specialist with experience in proteomics, metabolomics and/or lipidomics to join the mass spectrometry shared resource department. The successful candidate will play a key role in executing project design, mass spectrometry sample preparation, LC-MS/MS system operation, data analysis, and contributing to the development of new methodologies and protocols. This will be an excellent role for a scientifically minded professional with at least four years of mass spectrometry experience who enjoys helping researchers solve their scientific puzzles and contribute their sound hands-on skills in an outstanding academic research facility. We are also open to Research Technician-level candidates.

About the Department:

The mass spectrometry department at HHMI, Janelia Research Campus is a new shared resource which is dedicated to advancing scientific research and innovation in the field of proteomics, metabolomics, lipidomics and many more. We are equipped with pioneering instruments and solutions to facilitate the study of the dynamics, structures, functions, and interactions of various biomolecules which may correlate to cellular dynamics, neural and behavioral mechanisms.

What you'll do:

  • Proactively contribute to the development, optimization and validation of proteomics, metabolomics and lipidomics protocols and methodologies.

  • Perform sample preparation including biomolecule extractions, protein digestions, isotope labeling of biomolecules, LC fractionation, SPE sample cleanup and related sample purifications.

  • Operate and maintain state-of-the-art mass spectrometry instruments available onsite.

  • Analyze proteomics, metabolomics or lipidomics data using software packages and bioinformatics tools.

  • Keeps accurate and detailed records of experimental procedures, data analysis results, and assists in identifying and troubleshooting unexpected results.

  • Participate in project and team meetings and contribute to discussions on topics related to work performed at the shared resource.

  • Assist in daily operation of the mass spectrometry lab by reporting QC assessments of instrument performance, maintaining laboratory inventories and other related duties as needed.

  • May train junior laboratory personnel with respect to proper laboratory techniques, the use of laboratory equipment, and safety procedures.

  • Support the department commitment to maintain a workplace that embraces teamwork, equity, and inclusivity.

What you bring:

  • Master's degree in chemistry, biochemistry, biology, or a closely related field.

  • At least 4 years (Bachelor of Science) or 2 years (Master of Science) of hands-on experience of performing proteomics or metabolomics sample preparations, operating and/or maintaining LC-MS/MS systems.

  • Proficiency in using mass spectrometer operating software, particularly Thermo Xcalibur, is preferred. Experience in data analysis software such as Proteome Discoverer, Compound Discoverer, MaxQuant, DIA-NN and Skyline will be an asset.

  • Enthusiastic and self-motivated with the ability to work independently and creatively. Strong organizational, customer service skills and time management skills.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

  • Strong attention to detail and recordkeeping skills.

  • Ability to function effectively as a member of a team.

Physical Requirements

Remaining in a normal seated or standing position for extended periods of time; reaching and grasping by extending hand(s) or arm(s); dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers, for example using a keyboard; communication skills using the spoken word; ability to see and hear within normal parameters; ability to move about workspace. The position requires mobility, including the ability to move materials weighing up to several pounds (such as a laptop computer or tablet). Work may involve possible exposure to malodorous vapors, low dose radiation, contamination by toxic chemicals and acids and presence of carcinogenic substances or other hazardous materials.

Compensation Ranges:

Research Technician III:

$52,140.00 (minimum) - $65,200.00 (midpoint) - $84,700.00 (maximum)

Research Specialist I:

$67,540.00 (minimum) - $84,400.00 (midpoint) - $109,780.00 (maximum)

Pay Type:

Annual

HHMI's salary structure is developed based on relevant job market data. HHMI considers a candidate's education, previous experiences, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal equity when making job offers. Typically, a new hire for this position in this location is compensated between the minimum and the midpoint of the salary range.
