Circulation Desk Attendant

Summary

To provide circulation and reserves support for library patrons during the weekend hours of operation.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Assist in coordinating and implementing procedures of library circulation.
  2. Assist in maintaining patron database.
  3. Assist in coordinating and implementing procedures for reserve materials.
  4. Assist in coordinating library stack maintenance including the sorting of books, and other items according to classification code and the return of items to shelves, files, or other designated areas.
  5. Ensure proper maintenance of library computers and other hardware and assists students, faculty, and staff with computer and printer use.
  6. Safeguard the confidentiality of departmental administration by exercising discretion communicating information to faculty, staff, and students and in handling departmental records and files.
  7. Greet patrons and answers routine inquiries regarding circulation issues on the telephone and in person and refers persons requiring reference assistance to a Librarian.

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or ability required.

  1. High school diploma or General Education Degree (GED) required.
  2. Two or more years of library-related experience preferred.
  3. Well-developed interpersonal skills, including the ability to write routine reports and correspondence independently. To speak effectively with students, faculty, staff and other library patrons and representatives.
  4. Ability to work independently and as a staff team member, including the ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where some standardization exists.
  5. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedures manuals. Ability to interpret instructions furnished in a variety of forms.
  6. Ability to accommodate a flexible schedule, including evening and weekend hours.
  7. Ability to continue learning through classroom instruction, workshops or seminars.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

The employee is regularly required to stand with arms extended to heights greater than 60 inches. The employee must also be able to hear, comprehend, and respond to library users both in person and on the phone. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 75 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include reading the computer screen, call numbers and barcode labels.
