Position description:

The Seattle Aquarium, a leading marine conservation organization, is looking for an Overnight Operations and Security Officer to join the facilities team. The overall duty of an overnight operations and security officer is to protect the Aquarium property, employees, and guests. Overnight security officers monitor Aquarium property, provide guest service, and document incidents during their shift. While on duty, promote Seattle Aquarium safety and security policies. Works as part of the security team, escalating security concerns to the Security Supervisor.

Key functions:

  • Uphold Seattle Aquarium's S.A.L.I.S.H values, to foster an inclusive community for staff, guests, and all who engage with the security team. All Aquarium staff and volunteers are expected to participate in advancing and integrating into their work Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Regenerative practices in alignment with our values.

  • Provide quick, confident responses to all radio calls related to security.

  • Frequent patrols of both indoor and outdoor areas of the Aquarium campus, including the Market Square office across the street. Be vigilant towards facilities related problems.

  • Monitor life support gauges and alarm messages for animal habitat control systems. Check for pipe leaks and other emergent issues. Communicate issues in a timely and effective manner and help resolve as needed.

  • Conduct extensive nightly rounds to check on animal welfare. Inspect aquarium equipment such as skimmer boxes, oxygen tanks and pumps.

  • Provide emergency-related facilities coverage including basic pipe tracing and valve operation as instructed by on-call engineering staff (training will be provided). On occasion may be called upon to assist animal care staff.

  • Monitor life support gauges and alarm messages for animal habitat control systems. Check for pipe leaks and other emergent issues. Communicate issues in a timely and effective manner and help resolve as needed.

  • Interact with members of the unhoused community with compassion and respect while enforcing Aquarium policies.

  • Respond to medical emergencies by administering basic first aid, or by obtaining assistance from paramedics.

  • Consult with the Seattle Police Department in the event of 911 calls.

  • Assist with deliveries and shipping.

  • Respond to difficult Interactions with guests and members of the public with an eye for de-escalation.

  • Draft reports of daily activities and irregularities, such as equipment or property damage, theft, presence of unauthorized persons, or unusual occurrences.

  • Participate in Seattle Aquarium trainings including occasional trainings during the day (with advance notice from security supervisor).

  • Interact with staff, volunteers, and vendors daily with the goal of delivering excellent customer service to all audiences.

  • Run missing child procedures in accordance with Seattle Aquarium policy.

  • Provide crowd control support under the direction of the floor lead.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required skills and experience: We will consider various combinations of relevant experience and education to meet minimum requirements.

  • 1-2 years' experience in security

  • Prior customer service experience preferred.

  • Ability to convey Information effectively.

  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.

  • Ability to work independently.

  • Demonstrates an understanding of the Aquarium's Mission and Values, including Regenerative and Equity work.

  • Multilingual and multicultural communication skills and experience are preferred.

Working conditions:

  • Sitting and standing for extended periods of time.

  • Must be able to conduct regular walking foot patrols through entire campus including behind the scenes areas.

  • Ability to go outside in variable weather conditions.

  • Occasionally lift or carry up to 40 pounds.

  • Ability to work with the public, sometimes in heavy crowds.

  • Work is conducted on the Aquarium floor.

Salary and benefits: $25 per hour Dependent on experience, with an additional $2.00/hour shift differential for nighttime hours. Please include salary expectations in your materials.
