Research Scientist - Power Systems Protection, Raleigh - North Carolina USA

We are looking for a research scientist with expertise in Power Systems Protection for our research center in Raleigh, North Carolina. As a scientist in the global Hitachi Energy Research organization, you will propose and lead cutting edge research projects to push the boundaries of knowledge and technology for Hitachi Energy's future products and services.

Your Responsibilities

  • Contribute to and lead research projects in power systems control, substation automation, protection, and related fields.
  • Formulate research hypothesis to address technology gaps, and prove/disprove them through simulation, controller-hardware-in-loop (CHIL), power-hardware-in-loop (PHIL)
  • Identify technology gaps that address present and future business needs.
  • Network in the company and actively distribute your knowledge and expertise
  • Collaborate with external partners including universities, startups and vendors
  • Disseminate your results in scientific publications, patent applications, and technical reports

Your Background

  • PhD degree in Electrical Engineering with specialization in Power Systems, or in a related field.
  • Extensive experience in power systems simulation and control is required.
  • Proficient in one or more of commonly used power systems simulation platforms like PSCAD, Matlab, PSS/E, etc.
  • Knowledge of relevant standards and protocols such as IEC 61850 (GOOSE and SV), DNP3, PMU protocols, etc. is preferred.
  • Hands-on experience with Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs), remote terminal units (RTUs), SCADA / EMS, etc. is highly desired.
  • Hands-on experience with controller-hardware-in-loop (CHIL) and/or power-hardware-in-loop (PHIL) systems such as RTDS, OPAL-RT is beneficial.
  • Good written and verbal communication and presentation skills in English
