Social Work Intern, Anxiety Disorders Center

Summary:

The Child Mind Institute offers 2nd year MSW graduate students a clinical social work internship in the Anxiety Disorders Center (ADC). The Anxiety Disorders Center specializes in treating children, teens, and young adults with a variety of anxiety disorders including obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), social anxiety, separation anxiety, phobias, and selective mutism (SM). The program offers innovative, unique treatments in both standard outpatient and intensive outpatient modalities. Social work interns will receive specialized training in evidenced-based treatment for anxiety disorders including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) and Parent Child Interaction Therapy adapted for Selective Mutism (PCIT-SM). Social work interns will carry their own case load of individual clients and will also have opportunities to co-lead groups. Social work interns may also have opportunities to be involved in individual and group intensive treatment programs as part of our social anxiety, OCD, and selective mutism programs. Social work interns may also provide school and home-based interventions, when clinically indicated.

As a component of the training experience, social work interns will participate in a variety of learning experiences at the Child Mind Institute. Specifically, social work interns will attend didactics, clinical meetings with center staff, and attend lectures through our Visiting Professor Series, consisting of renowned experts in mental health. Social work interns will also receive weekly individual and group supervision.

Primary Faculty:

The Anxiety Disorders Center staff includes leading clinical psychologists, social workers and mental health counselors. Center staff regularly collaborates with pediatric neuropsychologists, child and adolescent psychiatrists, and child and adolescent psychologists and other staff from our multidisciplinary clinical team.

Learning Opportunities:

  • Supervision: Interns will receive one hour of individual supervision per week, as well as group supervision for our specialized programs. In-vivo supervision is also available. Group supervision for specialized programs occurs fully in person with an option to join remotely. Based on intern preference and flexibility to coordinate with supervisor schedule, individual supervision can be available in-person. Supervisors have an open-door policy and make themselves available to the extent that schedules allow.
  • Didactics: Interns will have training didactics that will be weekly throughout the year, as well as more intensive training didactics at the start of their internship.
  • Lecture Series: Interns will have the opportunity to attend both Case Conference, which features our staff clinicians presenting their own cases for discussion, as well as our Visiting Professor Lecture Series, for which we invite renowned experts to present on their areas of research and expertise.
  • Presentations: Interns may assist in faculty presentations to professional and community groups. Interns may also have the opportunity to participate in research and conference presentations. Together we decide what role interns take, depending on the individual extern's level of experience and comfort in that subject area. It has varied from simply observing our presentations to taking the lead as a presenter.

Responsibilities:

  • Evaluation: Interns will observe and participate in structured and semi-structured diagnostic evaluations and learn about writing comprehensive evaluation reports. These evaluations will be conducted with Anxiety Disorders Center faculty.
  • Evidence-based treatments: Patients and families will be treated using evidence-based interventions including CBT, Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) and Parent Child Interaction Therapy adapted for Selective Mutism (PCIT-SM) and group based and intensive interventions. Training in these interventions will be provided.
  • Individual and family psychotherapy: Interns will be the primary therapist for cases, including individual therapy, family sessions, and parent training. Interns may also be involved in intensive treatment cases. Intensive cases are generally treated by teams of clinicians and provide up to four hours per day, up to five days per week of treatment. Interns may also provide school and home-based interventions when clinically indicated.
  • Treatment Programs and Group Therapy: Interns will receive training and will participate in weekly Selective Mutism, Brave Buddies, and Social Anxiety Groups.
  • Availability: Interns must be available for the internship program for a full semester and for 20 hours each week. Thursdays and Fridays are required days. Interns must be available during after school hours/evenings on Thursdays and 1 other day during the week. This is a primarily in-person internship.

Qualifications:

  • Must be enrolled in an MSW program.
  • Must have previous internship or volunteer experience working with children, teens and/or young adults in a clinical setting.
  • Flexibility to complete internship hours to meet program productivity expectations. This includes afternoon / evening hours to accommodate school schedules.
  • Team player and ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Demonstrated professional attitude and ability to interface with senior management, clinicians, and staff.
