Life Support Systems Technician
Our animals thrive when their water is fresh, just like we do! Our Aquatics Team works to make sure Fiona, Bibi, our manatees, penguins and other aquatic family members have the best habitat in which to live and play. In support of this, you will perform work on aquatic features in a variety of animal areas as well as some non-animal aquatic features.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:


  • Monitoring water quality, clarity and chemistry of our aquatic exhibits
  • Daily operation and maintenance of life support and other aquatic systems while promoting water conservation
  • Daily backwashing and media changes of filtration systems
  • Developing and implementing preventative maintenance schedules for aquatic systems
  • Participate in Dive operations as needed
  • Troubleshoot and repair pumps, sand filters, valves, actuators controllers, ozone generators, chlorine disinfection systems and miscellaneous equipment
  • Performs research and development pertaining to the design and operation of life support system components and/or the effectiveness of components or systems
  • Able to interpret water quality data and perform corrections to systems as needed
  • Keep water quality standards in exhibits in compliance with USDA/APHIS Animal Welfare Act and Marine Mammal Protection Act requirements
  • Assisting with and understanding ozone systems, chlorination and UV sterilization.
  • Performing minor repairs and assisting with major maintenance on aquatic systems and exhibits
  • Other related duties as assigned to ensure the overall well being of the animals and advance the mission of the Zoo


Qualifications:


  • The ideal candidate will have demonstrated knowledge and experience with aquatic systems in a zoo or aquarium and a strong working knowledge of water chemistry
  • Must have 1-3 years of experience/training in mechanical repair, plumbing, life support systems and electrical systems.
  • Candidate must have strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • College degree in biology or life sciences preferred
  • Aquatic Animal Life Support Operators (AALSO) certification is desired
  • SCUBA certification is preferred
  • Animal husbandry knowledge would be preferred


Working Conditions/Other Requirements:


  • Employment is contingent upon passing a post-offer, pre-employment drug and nicotine screen.
  • While performing the duties of the job, the incumbent is regularly required to stand, walk, climb and utilize manual dexterity to use various tools, machines and equipment.
  • Must be organized and able to work independently without close supervision
  • The position is required to collaborate with animal department and maintenance personnel to insure that water quality management practices are to the highest standards
  • Interact cooperatively with other employees, Zoo visitors and volunteers
  • Must have the ability to work in difficult and confined areas in all types of weather conditions
  • Must be able to lift and move 50 pounds without mechanical assistance; and have a valid driver's license and be insurable to drive a Zoo vehicle.


Due to the unique diversity of work required at an institution like a zoo, flexibility and a desire to help out in any and all situations is a must. A positive attitude is required in order to be considered for this position.
Position Details: This is a full-time position, represented by AFSCME Local 282, and is subject to the successful completion of a probationary period and the deduction of union dues. Position will require working at least one weekend day.
