About the Job

The Office of International Programs and Services (IPS) is a key driver of global engagement for the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD), helping to provide strategic vision for the institution and coordinating opportunities for students, faculty, and staff. Global engagement is an integral aspect of UMD, empowering students and faculty to participate in academic mobility, foster an appreciation of diversity, and contribute to the internationalization of the campus.

The director provides strategic and budgetary leadership in support of global engagement, advising the Chancellor, the Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs (EVCAA), academic deans, senior administrators, and faculty on international policies, opportunities, and events that impact members of the campus community. The director manages the office of International Programs and Services, and is responsible for matters related to study abroad and student exchange, international partnerships and outreach, and the English Language and Culture Institute. The director also collaborates with the office of Enrollment Management on international recruitment efforts.

The starting salary range is $75,000 and will depend on experience and qualifications.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities

Internal and External Collaborations (45%)

  • Develop and maintain relationships with internal departments, including all collegiate units, enrollment management and international admissions, Office of Diversity & Inclusion, the graduate school, student financial services, and other relevant offices to advocate and support student needs.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with external organizations involved in international academic mobility (e.g. Fulbright, NAFSA, United States Department of State, IIE, etc.).
  • Ensure coordination and communication between UMD's International Programs and Services office and the UM System Global Programs and Strategy Alliance office.
  • Collaborate with senior administrators to support international education initiatives.
  • Advocate internally and externally for resources to support and enhance global engagement.
  • Collaborate with the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, and Colleges in providing immigration information to campus departments to ensure university compliance with federal immigration regulations.
  • Develop and coordinate articulation agreements with international colleges, universities, and organizations.
  • Collaborate with colleges and Enrollment Management on recruitment initiatives.
  • Collaborate with campus partners for welcoming and supporting international students.

Strategic Leadership (30%)

  • Provide leadership and strategic planning for university global engagement.
  • Provide leadership and management for all aspects of the office of IPS, including programs, processes and procedures, and budget.
  • Provide leadership and management in outreach and partnership development, creating and maintaining interinstitutional relationships with higher education institutions throughout the world.

Operations (25%)

Develop and implement policies and practices for risk management, travel safety, communications, and other travel-related matters, and respond to emergency situations

  • Ensure compliance with risk management, assessment, academic, and other university policies and procedures.
  • Provide status updates and other reports on international education to the Chancellor, Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, senior administrators, university committees, and departments.
  • Provide leadership and expertise in creating high quality and meaningful faculty-and-staff led study abroad programs.
  • Convene the Faculty Advisory Committee for Study Abroad.
  • Participate and actively engage in University continuous improvement initiatives and strategies and apply knowledge to everyday work.
  • Actively engage in creating an inclusive, welcoming, and professional work environment for staff, students, and visitors.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Director of International Partnerships and Outreach
  • Director of English Language and Culture Institute
  • Operations & Finance Specialist
Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • BA/BS degree plus at least 8 years of relevant experience, or master's degree plus at least 6 years of relevant experience.
  • Knowledge of current issues and best practices related to international education both on campus and abroad.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Graduate degree in a field relevant to international education such as: international education administration, intercultural communication, international relations, student services personnel, higher education administration, or other relevant areas.
  • Progressively responsible, relevant experience in international education, and/or in higher education administration.
  • Knowledge of immigration regulations pertaining to non-immigrant F-1/J-1 visa holders.
  • Knowledge of higher education systems outside the United States.
  • Practical knowledge of SEVIS and other applicable federal government regulations pertaining to non-immigrant F-1/J-1 visa holders.
  • Ability to respectfully work, communicate, and provide leadership within a diverse campus community.
  • Superior interpersonal, organizational, analytical, writing, and speaking abilities.
  • Demonstrated experience in budget management and forecasting.
  • Demonstrated experience working with external organizations involved in international academic mobility.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with faculty, students, staff, and individuals from different cultural backgrounds in various countries.
  • Experience advising international students and/or students on study abroad programs.
  • Experience working with faculty on developing faculty-led study abroad programs and curriculum integration.
  • Overseas living, extended stay, or work experience.
  • Competency in a language other than English.
