DESCRIPTION

The Optometrist works independently as a member of the UCSD Eyemobile Community ophthalmology Division and performs examinations and procedures, use medical devices and technology, treat conditions, and prescribe the use of pharmaceutical agents as allowed by the California State Board of Optometry. Provides primary eye care including diagnosis, treatment, and management of diseases, injuries, and disorders of the visual system, and associated structures as well as identifying related systemic conditions affecting the eye for individuals of all ages in the Eyemobile. A mobile eye unit.

In addition may perform contact lens fittings on eyes to correct for corneal defects and eye conditions caused by ocular disease, injury, or surgery while maximizing visual function, comfort, and eye . Uses skills as an experienced professional with a full understanding of industry practices and campus policies and procedures to resolve a wide range of issues. Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Doctoral degree in optometry issued by an accredited school / college of optometry.

  • Licensed as a Doctor of Optometry by the California State Board of Optometry.

  • Thorough knowledge of optometry and skills essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to this position.

  • Thorough knowledge of eye diseases diagnosis.

  • Demonstrated skill in fitting and prescribing specialty contact lenses.

  • Must be able to effectively communicate findings of examination to patients.

  • Requires strong communication and presentation skills.

  • Position must be able to work with diverse client group.

  • Position must be able to provide direction and guidance to less experienced staff members.

  • Must be able to work in a collaborative manner with staff, faculty, and members of the health care community across the campus.

  • Requires effective interpersonal skills.

  • Thorough professional skills in delivering eye care, treatment, and diagnostic services to patients.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Knowledge and adherence to the UCSD Principles of Community.

  • Bilingual, Spanish and English speaking.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • May need to travel to different locations including satellite clinics out of state.

  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.
