Sustainability Intern (Summer 2024)

Destination DC
18 per hour Students receiving school credit for the internship will receive a weekly stipend. Students who do not receive school credit will earn $18-20/hour.

)Be a part of a dynamic team working to support and engage local businesses! Destination DC (DDC), the official convention and tourism corporation for our nation's capital, is looking for a student who is passionate about Washington, DC and the travel industry to assist the organization's Partnerships & Alliances (P&A) team.

Department Summary

P&A is an exciting and entrepreneurial revenue-generating department within DDC. P&A generates approximately 15% of DDC overall revenue through membership (dues), sponsorships and special events. Engagement and retention of the nearly 1,000 businesses and acquisition of new members is critical. These businesses contribute to our city's vibrant economy and the positive image and identity of Washington, DC as a world-class destination for locals, visitors, and convention attendees to enjoy.

Reports To: Senior Manager, Sustainability

Training:

You can expect to receive training in these areas:



  • Membership benefits, the work of all the DDC departments and how this fits together to help support local businesses
  • Using the SimpleView CRM
  • Introduction to sustainable tourism and events



Your Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Strategy Development/Certification



  • Conduct research on competitor destinations' sustainability strategies.
  • Assist in a readiness assessment of Washington, DC for third-party sustainability certification by conducting desk research and communicating with Destination DC members.


Program Support



  • Assist in member recognition program research by continuously looking out for new program prospects. We call this activity, "lead spotting".
  • Update partner records, run reports, and track communications in the CRM (Simpleview).
  • Assist in the annual revision and redevelopment of the member recognition program's criteria and resource database.


Event Support



  • Support the development of slides and materials for sustainability events.
  • Attend and assist with in-person and virtual sustainability events.


Communications



  • Develop and implement a dashboard, tracking DDC's progress towards sustainability goals.


General Department Duties as needed



  • Special event support: P&A produces monthly educational and networking events for members. When possible, attend and assist with programing.
  • Attend weekly company-wide and departmental meetings.
  • Administrative tasks including filing and preparing meeting packets.
  • Collaborate with other DDC departments.
  • Other duties as assigned.



What You Bring: Education, Experience & Competencies:



  • Must be junior or senior year college student, in good standing.
  • Strong qualitative research skills and a sense of curiosity. Quantitative research skills a plus.
  • Great sense of humor, positive attitude.
  • Good organizational skills and ability to multi-task.
  • Exceptional customer service and business etiquette.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Technical proficiency with Microsoft Office and customer relationship management (CRM) systems recommended.
  • The position requires interaction with partners, members and clients.



Internship Specifics:

Duration



  • Summer (May 28 - August 1)
  • This is a full-time position. You must commit 27+ hours per week, 5 days/week.
  • Position will follow P&A's in person (Wednesdays & Thursdays) and remote work schedule.
  • Hours worked must be within the parameters of Monday-Friday, 8:30am-5pm EST to coincide with the operational hours of the office.


Work Environment

This Intern will follow Destination DC's policies for staff and may work hybrid, coming into the office at a minimum on the department's designated days (Wednesday & Thursday). Intern may work from the office on other days, too. Intern must have reliable internet to work remotely.
