We have two intern opportunities where you can work alongside engineering professionals in the Flood Warning or Special Projects Branch. In both roles you will gain practical; hands-on experience to ensure accurate and critical water flow data is available for first responders, safety agencies, and the residents of Maricopa County.

Flood Control? In a Desert? Absolutely! Though Maricopa County is in a desert, floods do occur during two distinct rainy seasons - the summer monsoon and winter frontal rains. Although the Flood Control District has made great progress over the years building and operating flood control structures, work remains to be done as the county continues to be one of the fastest growing in the United States. Our team helps citizens and public agencies make important decisions regarding flood protection in the Valley.

We Require

• No prior experience necessary.

• Junior/Senior level undergraduate or graduate student actively enrolled in one of the following or closely related degree programs: Civil Engineering, Environment Engineering, Hydrology, Meteorology/Atmospheric Science, Physics, Geography or Geology.

• Must possess or have the ability to obtain by the time of hire, a valid Arizona driver's license

We Also Value

• Ability to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing

• Ability to complete tasks efficiently and with minimal supervision

• Computer experience with Microsoft Office programs, especially Excel

• Working knowledge of GIS software & Concepts: ArcGIS or ArcPro

• Educational experience in Water Resources related to Hydrology and Hydraulics

Job Contributions

• Assist preparing the MSP's daily Weather Outlook product and other operational flood warning responsibilities; compile weather, rain & forecast data to verify forecast accuracy.

• Update & distribute notification pages from active Flood Response Plans and other emergency manuals used at the District.

• Assist with maintaining and developing ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online projects related to flood warning and public information dissemination.

• Perform field reconnaissance, including surveying, to collect post-flood data; Monitor weather sensor quality & accuracy, perform weather sensor calibrations.

• Assist with preparation of hydrologic and hydraulic (H&H) model input data and post-processing of model output, including FLO-2D or HEC-RAS 2D models.

• Editorial review of technical reports.

• Apply Geographic Information System (GIS) software to support H&H modeling and to prepare exhibit maps.

Working Conditions

• Exerting up to 20 lbs. occasionally, 10 lbs. frequently, or negligible amounts constantly OR requires walking or standing to a significant degree.

• Incumbent may be subjected to extreme temperatures, wetness/humidity, respiratory hazards and noise and vibration.

• Position is typically office or administrative work and is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.
