The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Position Summary

The Institute of Comparative Medicine (ICM) Senior Manager of Behavioral Management is an integral and highly regarded component of the biomedical research effort at Columbia University. The Senior Manager of Behavioral Management works closely with veterinary, medical and research specialists as part of a multidisciplinary team managing the behavioral husbandry, environmental enrichment and behavioral assement and management programs. The Senior Manager's role encompasses behavioral assessment and management for multiple species and ensures that systems and processes meet industry and regulatory standards. The incumbent will assure that all tasks are completed in a timely and cost-effective manner while adhering to applicable federal agency and Columbia University policies and procedures.

Responsibilities



  • Behavioral Management: Manages the psychological well-being of various laboratory animal species (non-human primates, farm animals, dogs, rabbits, frogs, fish, birds, mice, rats, hamsters, gerbils and guinea pigs) and demonstrates this through behavioral monitoring and management, oversees behavioral husbandry program including the implementation, provision and documentation of an environmental enrichment and social housing programs for multiple species. Collaborates with veterinary staff to recommend improvements in behavioral management program including specific behavioral treatment recommendations. Implements positive reinforcement training, habituation and desentizitization techniques to cooperatively work with a variety of laboratory animal species.
  • Training: Assists with the training program in regards to behavior and behavioral management of a variety of laboratory animals; and provides didactic and hands-on training of personnel in positive reinforcement training, habituation, desensitization, and enrichment of laboratory animals.
  • Research support: Provides guidance to investigators upon request on protocol development with regards to positive reinforcement training, habituation and desensitization techniques that would support research aims.


Minimum Qualifications



  • Bachelors degree and/or 5 years experience in animal science, veterinary science, animal behavior, or behavioral management required.
  • Masters or Doctoral degree in animal behavior or animal welfare preferred.
  • At least 5 years of experience in laboratory animal medicine is required; experience in behavioral management preferred.
  • Supervisory experience a plus. Prior experience in an academic environment is a plus.
