Scope of Position:

The primary function of this position is to teach both large and small groups of students. Lead teacher will be charged with maintaining the protection, health, happiness, discipline, cleanliness, character, and skill development of all students. Develop and implement a developmentally age-appropriate Preschool program for children ages 4-6. Overall, an instructor will supervise and lead activities for Preschool or Pre-K program while ensuring the student's safety and wellbeing. 10-months out of the year teacher in Preschool Promise Program and Kroc Preschool, other 2 months are assisting in camp and FAE programming, may work as camp counselor.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:

General: Effective verbal and written communications, ability to multitask. Must be able to read, write and communicate in English. Must have ability to work and relate well with people. Patience, perseverance, and flexibility are essential for being successful in this position.

Organization: The ability to maintain a directed schedule along with the ability to lead a large group through multiple projects in a timely manner. This position requires someone who is responsible; detail oriented and has the ability to take projects from beginning through completion.

Professional: The ability to work in a distinctively Christian environment. The ability to interact with co-workers and the public in a positive, professional manner in conformity with The Salvation Army Mission Statement. The ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds and circumstances. Able to work with limited supervision, and work in a team setting with other professionals. Exercise good judgment and comfortable taking initiative with projects.

Skills & Abilities: Ability to use discretion and sound judgment when interacting with others and while making decisions. Flexibility and a cooperative spirit are crucial characteristics of the individuals who hold this important position.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:



  • Maintain the Code of Ethics policy, which has been established for the Kroc Center.
  • Regular and punctual attendance is an essential job requirement.
  • Establish and consistently enforce rules of behavior and The Salvation Army policies and discipline procedures to maintain order in the classroom.
  • Will communicate any student, parent, or staff issues with the Fine Arts & Education Coordinator immediately. Follow up with appropriate documentation as directed.
  • Will keep student and staff issues confidential. Do not share issues with other students, parents or patrons, news organizations or staff who are not involved.
  • Responsible for the maintenance of students' personal medications.
  • Ensure equipment is returned to the appropriate designated area and area is cleaned upon completion of activity with group unless otherwise arranged.
  • Maintain a safe working environment: report any and all facility defects/problems to the Fine Arts & Education Coordinator.
  • Assist in emergencies or treatment of injured participants or staff. Follow up with completion of appropriate paperwork as directed.
  • Facilitate Preschool check in and out procedures according to protocol. Check ID of each person signing out a student.
  • Maintain an accurate roster for each class, including the staff that is assigned to that specific class.
  • Will maintain an accurate head count of students at all times.
  • Assist in coordinating logistics for Preschool field trips.
  • Create and provide monthly schedule of activities through newsletter and calendar.
  • Keep parents informed of program expectations, program activities and their child's progress.
  • Develop and maintain current, accurate, and confidential student binder/files.
  • Plan activities, lesson plans, and specialized theme events.
  • Develop and post weekly lesson plans.
  • Plan and implement age-appropriate activities to meet the physical, emotional, intellectual, and social needs of the children in the program, such as games, art, music, dramatic play and field trips.
  • Develop culturally and socioeconomically appropriate programs and activities.
  • Develop activities that introduce and promote math and literacy concepts.
  • Clearly and effectively communicate in a manner that children understand.
  • Possess the ability to understand small children.
  • Integrate special needs children in a positive and respectful manner.
  • Teach skills that are in alignment with current state of Oregon standards and prepare students for kindergarten.
  • Create an age appropriate and positive classroom environment that promotes engaged learning.
  • Establish daily routines and schedules in the classroom.
  • Seek the participation of all students, and take student opinions into account,
  • Use different teaching methods to incorporate all styles of learning.
  • Analyze and study performance and behavior of each and every child in the classroom and identify their strengths and weaknesses. Develop strategies for supporting their weaknesses and embed strategies in instruction and activities provided.
  • Be willing to employ new teaching methods.
  • Assist in day camp programs during seasons when Preschool classes are not in session.
  • May sub in other FAE/Camp classes and programs.
  • Assist in planning and prepping activities for all Preschool, Day Camp and FAE programs as assigned.
  • Make learning a fun and exciting activity and be able to inspire and motivate children to keep learning.
  • Implement research-based educational programming and curriculum that meets required standards for Preschool Promise.
  • Conduct required student developmental screening and assessments and communicate with parents about student progress.
  • Participate in continuous quality improvement system (SPARK) focused on effectively implementing Preschool Promise quality requirements and ensuring positive outcomes for all children.
  • Assist in creating family engagement opportunities for assigned classroom.
  • Participate in required ongoing training for Preschool Promise Grant
  • Teach skills that are in alignment with current state standards and support families in transition to kindergarten and other early learning settings.


Physical Requirements:



  • Must be able to perform tasks of a repetitive nature without diminished performance.
  • Must be able to carry up to 40 lbs. for short distances.
  • Must be physically able to give emergency care if a situation arises.
  • Must be able to walk, bend, stoop, squat, twist body, stand for short/long periods of time, kneel push, pull, have sense of touch, reach, grasp with hands and fingers, climb stairs, close vision, distance vision, smell, talk, hear, have eye-hand coordination, have manual dexterity, speak and read English and work in noisy areas.
  • May walk or stand on varied surfaces. Will require work outdoors in all types of weather conditions.
  • Must be able to sit for long periods of time in front of a computer screen.


Working Conditions:



  • This position may have frequent phone and in person contact with people from diverse backgrounds who may be angry, hostile, confused or frustrated.
  • Must be prepared to handle chemicals in a safe and appropriate manner as outlined by OSHA and MSDS standards.
  • Some programs may require the use of chemicals during projects or clean up. The person in this position must be prepared to wear appropriate safety materials when handling chemicals. Including face masks, gloves, aprons, and respirators as needed.

Education and Work Experience:



  • Preferred minimum of 1-year experience, teaching in a Preschool or Kindergarten setting/licensed program or elementary education teaching experience.
  • qualifications for teacher according to Oregon State Certified Child Care Center and Preschool Promise
  • Preferred Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood education or a field related OR Associate degree with additional training in early childhood or Child Development Associate (CDA).
  • Preferred classwork in early childhood development/education or related field.
  • Must have a positive attitude toward helping and fostering children in their development.


License and Certifications:



  • CPR/First Aid certification before first day with students.
  • Food Handler's Card by first day of work.
