DESCRIPTION

Anesthesia Critical Care encompasses four areas: Surgical ICU, Rapid Recovery Unit, Cardiac ICU, and the East Campus ICU. The Rapid Recovery Unit (RRU) is a perioperative unit which can provide ICU level of care for patients that require less than 24 hours of care before downgrade to IMU, med-surg, or home.

The Physician Assistant (PA) will follow standardized advanced practice procedure guidelines to provide follow through with the care plan. Assess and provide medical care as appropriate for patient care populations based on competence, professional expertise, and knowledge. The Physician Assistant is expected to practice consistent with Professional Standards of Practice. Collaborate judgment with off-site physician is expected to be exercised within the context of interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approaches to patient care. Under general supervision, the PA performs operational level duties as described in the UCSD Performance Policy. The major emphasis of this position is direct patient care delivery. Assignments at this level primarily encompass management of patients who present chronic and/or episodic health problems. Assignments at this level may include responsibility for occasional community teaching programs, participation in program planning and development of patienteducation information. May perform other related duties as assigned.

Depending on experience of the selected candidate, this position will be hired at the PA or Sr. PA level.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must be a graduate from a physician assistant program approved by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA).

  • California Physician Assistant (PA) license.

  • Current PA Certification from NCCPA.

  • BLS/CPR and ACLS certifications at time of hire with commitment to get ART within six (6) months of hire date.

  • Recent ICU APP experience or large portion of training and prior experience being in adult ICU.

  • Proficiency in documentation of patient conditions and outcomes.

  • Proven knowledge of common diagnostic tests, exams and procedures, e.g., laboratory blood tests, x-rays, EKG's, biopsies and GI endoscopies.

  • Demonstrated strong computer skills and knowledge of PCIS/Epic for retrieval of patient data (Computer skills required; PCIS/Epic preferred).

  • Knowledge of clinical laboratory values and skill in identifying deviations.

  • Demonstrated experience providing patient education and counseling and developing and implementing long and short range treatment plans.

  • Knowledge of study formats, with ability to edit charts and resolve inconsistencies.

  • Skill in patient interviewing, obtaining a concise medical history and acquiring pertinent data.

  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced unit and triage acute patients while managing time.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Two (2+) or more years of adult critical care experience as a licensed Physician Assistant.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Shifts may include Monday-Sunday days and nights in the RRU and Surgical ICU.

  • A minimum of 50% night shifts required.

  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.

  • Must be able to obtain UCSD Medical Staff privileges and maintain during employment. Due to advanced practice credentialing eligibility, clinical advanced practice experience must be within the last two years gained through school or work experience.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $135,386 - $178,420 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $64.84 - $85.45

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
