Salary offers are based on the candidate's equivalent experience and internal equity with other employees within the same job classification. This position is eligible for overtime compensation for all hours worked over 40 in the designated workweek.

We want you to be our next diligent Shelter Associate to provide daily care and support for our shelter animals. You'll be an advocate for the animals in our care and promote the health, safety, and welfare of the people and animals of Maricopa County.

We Require

  • Six months of in-person customer service work experience

  • High school diploma or GED

We Also Value

  • Experience working with domestic animals in a veterinary hospital, animal control, humane society, or another animal facility

  • Bilingual Spanish and English-speaking skills

Job Contributions

  • Ensure shelter animals are properly housed and cared for within the guidelines of the Five Freedoms of Animal Welfare, and use positive reinforcement training methods.

  • Clean, disinfect, and maintain shelter apartments, kennels, cages, equipment, walkways, and general areas daily

  • Cultivate positive relations with clients, volunteers and coworkers, provide quality customer service, and promote our mission, services, programs, and events.

  • Participate in stress and disease reduction efforts through purposeful and compassionate low-stress handling and placement of animals

  • Create and maintain necessary animal records and perform data entry

  • Assist clients with the animal adoption process and facilitate client/animal interactions to ensure a safe and pleasant experience

  • Receive animals into the shelter, scan for identification, enter information into the database, and take an identifying photograph

Working Conditions

  • Fast-paced animal shelter environment with exposure to extreme and varying temperatures, dogs and cats with unknown temperaments and behaviors, excessive noise, wetness/humidity, respiratory hazards, noise, vibration, animal waste and fluids, deceased animals, cleaning chemicals, and zoonotic diseases

  • Ability to work as early as 5 AM and late as 7 PM, including weekends and holidays

  • Ability to lift, bend, stoop, stand, and walk on various surfaces, including slippery, uneven, and rough

  • Ability to exert 10-20 pounds constantly, 10-25 pounds frequently, and 50-100 pounds occasionally
