Position Summary: The Relief Teacher provides daily care, education, and recreation of children at multiple locations, depending on the need. The Relief Teacher provides emergent, child-directed, culturally responsive, developmentally appropriate activities for children while initiating and fostering positive guidance and behavior management practices for children. Teachers are also responsible for promoting and maintaining a positive and nurturing environment.

Education, Training and Experience:



  • Classroom management and/or supervision experience preferred.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook). Ability to track data and create reports.
  • Experience in a customer facing role preferred.



Competencies:



  • Good problem solving, time management and organizational skills.


  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Good judgment.
  • Knowledge and skills to deliver culturally competent services and work effectively in multicultural and diverse socioeconomic situations.


  • Current Food Handler certification or ability to obtain within 60 days of hire.



Essential Duties and Responsibilities:



  • Provide developmentally appropriate program activities that engage the interest and developmental level of the children.
  • Provide daily care and education of the children, including feeding, changing, and maintaining a clean and safe environment, as well as initiate and foster positive guidance and behavior.
  • Support the Court Care Program in maintaining a positive and nurturing classroom environment
  • Assist with record keeping, such as attendance, daily reports, and progress reports
  • Help to prepare and serve snacks and meals to children
  • Assist with maintaining the cleanliness and organization of the classroom and materials
  • Follow all policies and procedures of the Court Care, including those related to health and safety
  • Must ensure all children are supervised at all times and are involved in safe appropriate activities.
  • Interact in a highly professional and collaborative manner with program partners.
  • Provide reports and data on participation levels, incidents and daily activities to ensure timely and accurate documention of services provided, including monthly reporting.
  • Perform various administrative tasks (i.e., answering phones, database management, registering and enrolling new families, etc.).



Other Responsibilities:



  • Attend staff meetings and trainings as needed.


  • Other duties as assigned.



This position is not responsible for supervising other employees.

Schedule: This is a full-time, 40 hours/week position, Monday - Friday.

Work Environment:



  • This position works in a drop-in childcare center in the new Multnomah County Central Courthouse located in downtown Portland.
  • There may be a number of situations happening at once, and must be prepared to handle accidents and emergencies at any time.
  • The Head Teacher may experience smells associated with toileting and children who are ill.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is consistently required to stand, walk, sit, use hands and fingers to handle or feel objects, use keyboard and mouse, reach with hands and arms, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, talk and hear.
  • This position requires the ability to lift and carry children up to fifty (50) pounds and have sufficient mobility to maintain a level of supervision in all areas of the center.
  • Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision and the ability to adjust focus.
