Departmental Overview

The Innovative Genomics Institute uses genome engineering approaches to address problems in human health, climate, and sustainable agriculture.

Responsibilities

Safety Assays - including all controls and standards to measure assay performance:

  • Develop and test safety and efficacy assays that allow thorough and robust assessment of genomic outcomes. These include detection of on- and off-target outcomes (bulk and single cell), vector insertion detection, payload insertion quantification, and chromosome rearrangements.
  • As needed, consult FDA and campus regulatory requirements when developing assays to ensure compliance:

Efficacy Assays - including all controls and standards to measure assay performance:

  • Ensures safety and efficacy of assays and transition them to clinical lab staff to be run in a CLIA setting. These may include bulk amplicon sequencing, single cell sequencing, or quantitative PCR.
  • Quantify on-target gene correction.
  • Quantify on-target cassette integration.
  • Quantify on-target mutation.
  • Characterize integration outcomes

Documentation:

  • Keep detailed records of experiment protocols and outcomes.
  • Generate standard operating procedures for use by external shareholders.
  • Maintain or supervise laboratory inventory.

General:

  • Collaborate with laboratories within the broader IGI community to develop assays to support genome-editing related discoveries.
  • Attend weekly meetings with Assay Development team and other Interventional Genomics Unit projects as necessary.
  • Adhere to safety guidelines set forth by UCB.

Required Qualifications

  • Experience with general laboratory techniques.
  • Experience with standard molecular biology techniques: DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, qPCR, and cloning.
  • Experience with advanced molecular biology techniques: NGS library preparation and analysis, ddPCR, troubleshooting of complex procedures, and low-contamination workspace and maintenance.
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Willingness and ability to learn new methods and skills for changing research priorities.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, coordinate work tasks with others, and meet deadlines.

Education/Training:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Bioengineering, Molecular Biology, or a related field and/or equivalent experience/training.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working BSL2 facility and cell husbandry.
  • Experience with basic statistics and bioinformatics.
  • Experience working in a core or resource facility setting, or on assay development.

Education/Training:

  • Master's Degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Bioengineering, Molecular Biology, or a related field and/or equivalent experience/training.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $69,801.53 (step 5.0) - $99,680.28 (step 23.0).

  • This is a 100%, full-time (40 hours per week), career position that is eligible for full UC benefits.
  • This position is exempt and paid monthly.
