Departmental Overview

The Lawrence Hall of Science's (the Lawrence) mission is to inspire and foster learning of science and mathematics for all. The Lawrence is the public science center of the University of California, Berkeley (UCB), and an innovative leader in the field of science and mathematics education. As a national leader in the development of science and mathematics instructional materials, its approaches, programs, and tools are replicated, scaled up, and disseminated nationally in preK-12, college, and informal science education settings.

Responsibilities

The Lawrence Hall of Science's Learning Group initiative to advance K-12 science seeks to advance systems capacity building, professional learning support, and development and implementation of high-quality instructional materials. This initiative supports science leaders, including teachers in districts and schools and early childhood educators in various educational organizations.

The purpose of this position is to advance the development, improvement, and innovation of our Lawrence Hall of Science instructional materials programs. The position involves designing, conducting, promoting, and supporting various public educational programs specifically for the Science Education for Public Understanding Program (SEPUP) instructional materials program. SEPUP is currently leading multiple curriculum and assessment projects for K-12 audiences. This position will play a key role in SEPUP's development of assessment and curriculum materials and contribute leadership to the creation of approaches and program plans. This position will also contribute broadly to other ongoing projects within the SEPUP Program and the Center for K-12 Science around curriculum development, research and development.

  • Develops assessments, instructional materials, and related tools and resources.
  • May serve as a work leader in coordination of assessment and materials development with colleagues.
  • Plans and develops new content, and adjusts existing content for secondary science audiences.
  • Evaluates and adjusts materials through various feedback mechanisms.
  • Actively participates in long-range strategic planning for instructional materials development.

Required Qualifications

  • Strong content background in one or more natural sciences and understanding of science pedagogy.
  • Advanced expertise in developing and writing age-appropriate activity-based educational science lessons, assessments, and curriculum for secondary level students.
  • Thorough analytical skills to understand how business needs can be addressed through the design and delivery of new professional development programs, curriculum activities, and/or assessments.
  • Skill in using business software systems in the completion of work assignments (i.e., Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Google Suite).
  • Thorough reading, verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills, and good presentation skills, for various audiences, including secondary level students and educators.

Education and Training

  • Bachelor's degree in a related area and / or equivalent experience/training.
  • Continuing education in related fields.

Salary & Benefits

  • This is a 100% Contract position that ends one year from the date of hire.
  • Exempt, paid monthly with full benefits.
  • This is not a visa opportunity.

This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $77,600 - $109,000 annually.
