Job Description

POSITION OBJECTIVE
Working under general supervision, perform research work in tissue preparation and biomedical imaging. The successful candidate will be part of a large research team with the goal of creating the world's first vagus nerve connectome. This will require imaging at multiple resolutions using multiple modalities, including high resolution micro-CT, 3D-MUSE, a microscope invented at Case Western Reserve University, and histology.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
1. Plan and carry out project in accordance with general plans. Perform research work in biomedical field which involves use of lab skills. Optimize tissue processing and acquire images on instruments. (35%)
2. Conduct a series of experiments to supply scientific information as part of a larger project. Conduct analysis of samples, particularly analysis of nerve image data. (20%)
3. Assist in developing improved techniques, projection methods or procedures. Improve tissue preparation and embedding, trouble and/or improve image capture and storage. (10%)
4. Record results for experiments and analyses. Maintain meticulous records of samples analyzed. (10%)
5. Oversee inventory, order laboratory supplies. Maintain test equipment utilized in experiments. Keep a clean environment and provide maintenance as needed. (10%)
6. Train new staff; direct the work of students. Direct effort of undergraduates who assist on the project. (10%)

NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Perform other duties as assigned. (5%)

CONTACTS
Department: Daily contact with supervisor to discuss research and maintain workflow.
University: Occasional contact with other departments to share information.
External: Limited or no contact with vendors to exchange information.
Students: Contact with student employees to exchange information.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY
This position has no direct supervision of staff employees, but the RA2 will train new staff and direct the work of students.

QUALIFICATIONS
Education/Experience: Bachelor's degree in science and 1 to 3 year of experience or Associate's degree in an approved biotechnology program and 2 to 4 years of experience required.

REQUIRED SKILLS
1. Has knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices, and procedures within biomedical science.
2. Relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job.
3. Ability to operate laboratory equipment.
4. Ability to meet consistent attendance.
5. Ability to interact with colleagues, supervisors and customers face to face.

WORKING CONDITIONS
General laboratory environment. May have exposure to hazards such as laboratory chemicals and repetitive motion.
