Job Summary

The Cardiac Stress Nurse Practitioner has the primary role of ensuring the safety of the patient during the performance of a cardiac stress test. Working independently and collaboratively with the attending cardiologist, this individual will perform cardiac stress testing on Adult patients in the stress lab at Parnassus and across all UC locations as required. The NP works with the patient's referring Provider to ensure appropriate stress testing. The NP is responsible for the pre-assessment of the patient, diagnostic preparation, and obtaining consent. The NP monitors the patient throughout the test, in recovery and is responsible for the completion of documentation. Working under Standardized Procedures the Nurse Practitioner will provide urgent care to patients experiencing acute coronary syndrome, arrhythmias or other test/post-test complications using guidelines from the American Heart Association and American College of Cardiology. The testing includes performing exercise and pharmacological stress testing following advanced practice protocols. Supervision of the technicians during the stress test is expected.

Required Qualifications


  • Minimum two (2) years Nurse Practitioner experience.
  • Minimum two (2) years experience in the care of general cardiology, cardiac critical care, advanced heart failure, and adult congenital heart populations.
  • Prior telemetry experience.
  • Ability to identify arrhythmias and appropriate treatment.
  • Exposure to stress testing.
  • Possess the skills, knowledge and abilities essential to successfully perform the duties of the this position.
  • Ability to work independently and prioritize workload.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Strong commuter skills.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Work experience in an academic medical center.

License/Certification


  • California driver's license (CDL) if required for position.
  • Current national certification from an accepted certifying agency and provide by first day of work.
    • Accepted Certifications for this position: ACNP-BC, AGACNP-BC, ACNPC-AG, ACNPC, FNP-BC*, FNP-C* Link to UCSF NP Certification Table for reference: *Internal Candidates Only: Within the past 5 years, a minimum 2 years of NP experience in the same UCSF department, practice setting (outpatient vs. inpatient vs. critical care), and patient population (age group) AND one of the following certifications.
  • Hold a current and active RN and NP and Furnishing license in California.
  • Complete a BRN recognized graduate master's degree program as a nurse practitioner.
  • *Obtain an active and/or transferable DEA license to California and provide evidence by 90th day of clinical practice. (It is the
  • responsibility of the employee to transfer their DEA license to their new place of employment if from out of state, via online DEA portal and provide evidence of transfer).
  • Submit enrollment with CMS Medicare and Medicaid through credentialing by first clinical day. CCS enrollment as appropriate for pediatric environments.
  • Current AHA BLS
  • Current AHA ACLS
  • State regulation requires that you have a supervising physician to practice
  • Incumbents with less than 6 months of NP experience will be hired as a Nurse Practitioner 1

In most cases this is done through its Office of Medical Affairs & Governance (OMAG) prior to the first working day. Credentialing and approval of the Standardized Procedures takes between 60-90 days but can vary.
