Job Summary

The LGR is in search of a motivated computational biologist/bioinformatician, who will use their skills as a seasoned, experienced bioinformatics programming professional with a broad understanding of computational algorithms and systems to apply computational and statistical methods to analyze and interpret data obtained from the next generation of functional genomics screens. Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions. Operates independently.

The ideal candidate will have a strong grasp of NGS technologies, particularly single-cell sequencing, and practical experience using tools such as Seurat or scanpy for bulk and single-cell analysis.Additionally, familiarity with CRISPR technologies (CRISPRi/a/n) and a solid understanding of biology are essential. Imaging may be involved, and applicants with imaging analysis would be preferred.

Department Description

The Laboratory for Genomics Research, (LGR), situated adjacent to the UCSF Mission Bay campus in San Francisco is a groundbreaking functional genomics center, uniting researchers from UC Berkeley, UC San Francisco, and GSK. This unique hybrid model fosters collaborative and independent projects. Additionally, the laboratory serves as a resource for UC campus investigators to address their biomedical inquiries. Utilizing CRISPR/Cas9-based tools, LGR aims to unveil gene functions, discover new drug targets, and pioneer technologies for academia and industry. Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in biological science, computational / programming, or related area and minimum 3 years' experience and / or equivalent experience / training
• Experience in NGS bioinformatics methods, familiarity with popular databases (e.g. NCBI, ENCODE) and various NGS file formats
• Fluency in data science methods, including clustering, dimensional reduction and basic machine learning concepts
• Communication and interpersonal skills with both technical and non-technical personnel in multiple fields of expertise and at various levels in the organization
• Ability to interface with management on a regular basis
• Self-motivated, work independently or as part of a team, able to learn quickly, meet deadlines and demonstrate problem solving skills
• Proficiency in R or Python, as well as Unix/Linux shell scripting
• Strong statistical, mathematical, and analytical skills
• Ability to produce well-documented, high-quality code and troubleshoot problems independently

Preferred Qualifications

• Masters or PhD in biological science, computational / programming, or related area and / or equivalent experience / training
• Strong project management skills
• A strong understanding of biology
• Thorough knowledge of bioinformatics and machine learning methods used in image processing for high-throughput screens
• Hands-on experience analyzing single-cell datasets using Seurat or scanpy
• Familiarity with visualization libraries such as R Shiny
• Ability to communicate technical information in a clear and concise manner
• Thorough knowledge of web, application and data security concepts and methods
