Bilingual Spanish Interpreter

Major Responsibilities:
  • Provides fluent and thorough bilingual interpreting service in a direct patient care capacity to assist in patient understanding of clinical procedures, instructions, test results, etc. in accordance with Clinic procedures and communication policies/scripting:
    • 1)Consistently assists the clinical staff prepare patients for exams and treatments with appropriate interpretation.
    • 2)Capable of assisting the provider with all interpretation needs at the time of the visit.
    • 3)Explains procedures and test results using language appropriate to patient's level of understanding, guided by provider/clinical staff instructions.
    • 4)Consistently encourages questions from patients and family members, as guided by the provider or clinical staff, to help foster compliance.
    • 5)Is knowledgeable and able to assist with job duties of Interpreters at other sites.
    • 6)Restates information to ensure clarity and accuracy.
  • Utilizes interpreting skills to support indirect patient care and clerical responsibilities to support clinical staff, patients, families and department procedures:
    • 1)Collaborates with clinical staff for provision of services.
    • 2)Prioritizes and completes messages, communicating information to patients in a timely manner.
    • 3)Reports additional information including patient complaints or concerns, to provider, supervisor or clinical staff when appropriate.
    • 4)Serves as an advocate and liaison between patients, staff, providers and external customers by sharing necessary information to ensure continuity of care.
    • 5)Answers the telephone promptly within three rings.
    • 6)Transfers calls when appropriate, staying on the line and announcing where and why call was transferred. Exceptions to announcing the call would include when transferring to an ACD agent.
  • Responsible for complete, accurate and timely documentation of patient information:
    • 1)Provides consistent and accurate documentation of patient information, care and concerns in the EMR according to the guidelines provided in the Documentation Policy and as otherwise instructed.
    • 2)Provides written Spanish language interpretation services to staff, patients and visitors.
    • 3)Completes all patient documentation within two full clinic business days after care and/or services have been provided according to the Missing Documentation policy guidelines.
  • Manages/adjusts schedule according to department/staffing needs and assists in process improvement initiatives to support department/Clinic goals for patient satisfaction, continuity of care and safety:
    • 2)Recognizes trends and adds to process improvement plans related to interpretation needs.
    • 3)Consistently manages time in a professional manner, reporting promptly to departments as well as managing the EMR in-basket.
    • 4)Consistently communicates schedule conflicts in a timely manner to reception and/or clinical staff of departments impacted.
    • 5)Demonstrates flexibility by performing additional duties under the direction of supervisor.
    • 1)Consistently watchful of schedules, making adjustments as needed.


Education/Experience Required:
  • High school diploma or GED 2 years experience in ambulatory medical office setting. Experience handling difficult callers/customers/patients.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:
  • Fluent, bilingual skills with basic medical terminology knowledge in language required based on Clinic need/patient demographics. Good communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to type a minimum of 30 wpm preferred. CRT/PC experience in a customer service setting. Ability to solve problems posed by callers seeking referrals, appointments, billing issues and clinical information.
  • * Medical interpretation training/certification preferred (to be completed within 180 days of hire)


Physicial Requirements and Working Conditions:
  • Must be able to successfully complete clinic-based training for all associates. Ability to work with all levels of personnel. Ability to work under stressful situations. Frequent periods of extended standing and sitting. Possible lifting and assisting of patients.
  • If position has direct patient care or direct patient contact the following lifting requirement supersedes any previous lifting requirement effective 06/01/2015. Ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance. For patient lifts of over 35 pounds, or when patient is unable to assist with the lift, patient handling equipment is expected to be used, with at least one other associate, when available. Unique patient lifting/movement situations will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
