The School of Medicine's Department of Radiology has an opening for a full-time University Staff Postdoctoral Fellow position.

Overall Description of Responsibility or Nature of Work:

This position reports directly to Dr. Jody Tanabe, MD, Professor in the Department of Radiology. The goal of our research group is to treat and improve the understanding of mechanisms underlying substance use disorders. We use task-based and resting state functional MRI and electrophysiological methods to study brain addiction circuits. The successful candidate will be part of a diverse group of clinicians and scientists including radiologists, psychiatrists, neurosurgeons, neuroscientists, and will build upon the group's previous work using functional imaging and local field potentials.

Specific Position Duties (Percentages of Time are approximate) may include the following:

Data analysis (85%):




  • Create image analysis pipelines for functional MRI data



  • Maintain accurate, up to date imaging and field potential databases with QC/QA documentation



  • Conduct statistical image analyses to understanding neurobehavioral and treatment responses



  • Conduct signal processing analyses on local field potentials



  • Perform data analytics across temporal-spatial scales



  • Apply machine learning methods to predict brain-behavioral relationships




Scientific productivity (10%):




  • Submit and present at least 1 scientific abstract annually



  • Prepare and submit at least 1 first-authored manuscript annually



  • Conduct literature reviews, create annotated bibliographies, reference manager



  • Assist preparing papers and grants



  • Apply for independent research grants (optional)




Other (5%):




  • Maintain certifications in Human Subjects Research



  • Monitor participants during fMRI and local field potential (LFP) sessions



  • Attend weekly research meetings



  • Lead journal club

Salary and Benefits:

Salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established at $54,840 - $66,600, which is in alignment with the most current NIH NRSA pay scale, based on years of postdoctoral experience.

Minimum Requirements:

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.



  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a PhD degree in Biomedical engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Biostatistics, Neuroscience, Psychology, or related fields.
  • Research experience in at least one of the following areas: resting or task-based functional MRI, multivariate pattern analysis, or computational modeling.
  • Command of programming tools such as Matlab, R, Linux, Python, and scripting abilities, Jupyter notebooks, Google Colab.
  • Experience with image analysis, modeling, or data mining tools (i.e. AFNI, FSL, FreeSurfer, SPM, DTI studio, Conn, LEAD-DBS, fMRIPrep, etc.)


Desired or preferred:



  • Demonstrated evidence of critical thinking
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
