Job Summary
Auburn University Libraries is seeking an undergraduate or graduate student for the position of Student Assistant to assist faculty and staff with daily, routine library operations.
Essential Functions
Under the supervision of the regular library staff members, a student usually performs all/part of the following duties:

Circulation/Reserve/Stacks Duties:

  • Provide direct service to library patrons at the Circulation/Mell desk, which includes the checking in/out materials, answering questions, and directing patrons as needed
  • Assist patrons in using the online catalog, locating materials, and searching for resources
  • Perform alphanumeric sorting and shelving duties using the Library of Congress classification system
  • Shelf read, straighten materials, and clear library of browsed library materials
  • Answer the telephones, answer questions, and transfer calls as needed
  • Update records and performs general data entry
  • Assist in the processing and maintenance of course reserves collection
  • Assist patrons in understanding of fines and fees
  • Check and delivers mail to staff
  • Deliver books to offices on campus


Stacks Maintenance Duties:

  • Process inventory for RBD book collection using the Shelf Lister program on an iPad
  • Search/retrieve missing trace requests
  • Recycle withdrawn material
  • Collect books from the physical processing area for shelving
  • Prepare/replace range lists as needed
  • Forward/backward shifting of books to open up crowded areas on the shelves
  • Place stickers on items
  • Possible visits to offsite storage [OLAF]

Business Desk Duties:

  • Run reports
  • Research financial issues for Patrons
  • Accept and process payments
  • Edit patron financial records in Voyager by processing/posting forgives/payments
  • Educate the public and patrons about library policies to include new community users, borrowing policies, and library fines and fees
  • Assign and inspect study carrels
  • Assist with maintenance of the reserves and new books to include processing lists

Student Lead/Supervisor (Circulation):

  • After completing at least 1 semester at RBD, exceptional students may be chosen to be a student supervisor. This position includes all of the normal job duties with the additional responsibilities of being a shift supervisor:
  • Deal with building/patron emergencies
  • Supervise student workers and ensure that daily duties are completed correctly
  • Call in building maintenance issues
  • Open and close the building and ensure that all patrons leave the building before closing

Minimum Qualifications
Currently enrolled student at Auburn University
Expectations:

  • Report for the shift on time
  • Interest in public service and delivery of quality customer service
  • Be willing to work as a team member while interacting with faculty, staff, and students
  • Possess strong interpersonal and communications skills.
  • Dependability, multi-tasking, and the ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment are imperative.
  • A commitment to an inclusive and diverse campus environment is essential. Job frequently requires standing, walking, reaching, balancing, hearing, handling objects with hands, and occasionally lifting up to 50 pounds.

Preferred Qualifications
Pay Rate $7.50/hour
Work Hours Students will work up to 20 hours per week depending on availability and departmental needs.
