Position Summary:
The mission of the Study Abroad Center (SAC) is to foster a culture at UCI in which study abroad is expected and achievable for all students. The Center reports to the Office of Global Engagement (OGE) and assists students in participating in programs abroad that offer unique academic opportunities, international learning and personal development while making progress toward their UCI degree. Graduates who have studied abroad become future leaders - in public, private and non-profit sectors - with a more nuanced understanding of other countries and cultures as well as greater self-awareness and self-confidence. We aim to ensure that our students' study abroad experiences help them affect positive change in the world, both locally and globally.
Responsible for mitigating health and safety risks for students traveling outside the US. Implements, manages, evaluates and updates a comprehensive travel preparedness strategy, student international travel policies and procedures. Review and approval responsibility for travel proposals and provider partners including vetting universities for exchange. Develops and recommends risk mitigation strategies for independent study and faculty-led programs. Conducts outreach to promote, advise and train about health, safety and security overseas. Designs general and specific education abroad emergency plans, oversees emergency response, trains Study Abroad Center (SAC) staff and directly manages complex emergencies. Conducts training for faculty-led program leaders and student travelers. Collaborates with counterparts at the other UC schools and supports the international risk management efforts of the campus and system. Other campus units may request advice and collaboration for international research security and global strategy. Many operational functions of SAC are essential to risk management such as travel planning, data management, complete and timely student applications, orientation and waiver processes, reporting. Supervises two operations staff and provides overall management of internal processes of the unit. Works closely under the director to understand their vision and priorities and to direct unit operations to ensure they are accomplished effectively. Responsible for improving efficiency, productivity and ensuring high quality performance and client satisfaction. Creates work plans and manages development of SAC programs. Directly supervises operations and administrative positions within SAC. Recommends budget to director who has responsibility for financial decisions. The position reports to the Director of Study Abroad, is part of the Study Abroad Center team, and also works closely with the Chief Global Affairs Officer for broader campus concerns. Uses advanced operational concepts and objectives to resolve highly complex issues. Regularly works on issues where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors. Exercises judgment in selecting methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results. Primarily deals with programs and proposals with broad impact across study abroad and global engagement. Develops and oversees the implementation of new risk programs and processes.

The expected pay range for this recruitment is $81,900.00 - $87,456.00 (Annual Salary). The Full Salary Range for the salary grade this position is assigned to is $81,900.00 - $150,500.00 (Annual Salary).

Required:
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in risk management
  • Master's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
  • Advanced knowledge of common organizational- or research-specific and other computer application programs.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with all levels of staff and influence to articulate essential emergency information in a timely manner, including public speaking to present information to diverse groups and an ability to concisely present complex risk findings and make recommendations both verbally and in writing.
  • Professional acumen to handle sensitive or difficult situations with discretion
  • Ability to use discretion and maintain all confidentiality of highly sensitive or controversial information.
  • Advanced project management skills.
  • Ability to multi-task with demanding timeframes.
  • Advanced analytical / problem-solving skills including the ability to conduct research and analyze information from multiple sources and to summarize findings into clear and concise written format using text, graphics, and tables.
  • Demonstrated global travel risk management knowledge.
  • Substantial experience implementing and coordinating crisis response services in relation to critical situations or incidents abroad.
  • Customer service orientation, active listening skills, including skills to cultivate trust and build successful working relationships.
  • Excellent time management skills.
Preferred:
  • Thorough knowledge of organizational or initiative processes, protocols and procedures.
  • Advanced knowledge of applicable policy analysis techniques.
  • Experience effectively coordinating and improving travel preparedness outcomes with various constituents, such as university or business institutions, police, international organizations, US State Department, US embassies and consulates.
  • Experience with international security entities and/or travel security providers, especially in international incident response situations.
  • Ability to work and interact effectively with people who have different skills, backgrounds and experiences.
  • Professional certification in Risk Management.
Special Conditions Required:
  • Ability to respond to emergencies after hours as necessary.
  • Position eligible for hybrid work, inclusive of both onsite and remote work.
