Summary

Design, fabricate and fits devices such as braces and artificial limbs to provide care to patients who have

disabling conditions.

Requirements

Education:

Must have bachelor's degree or higher in orthotics and prosthetics from a Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) accredited program. OR,

(2) A bachelor's degree or higher in any major along with a post-graduate orthotics and prosthetics certificate from a CAAHEP accredited program

Experience:

None

Certifications / Licensure:

* Must have current license with the Texas Board of Orthotics and Prosthetics.

* Certification from The American Board of Certification in Orthotics and Prosthetics or the Board of Certification as a Certified Prosthetist Orthotist (CPO)

Preferred Certifications / Licensure

* Prefer certification with The American Board of Certification in Orthotics and Prosthetics

Must have a current Healthcare Provider CPR course completion card prior to hire and/or placement in job from one of the following:

  • American Heart Association
  • American Red Cross Rescuer
  • Military Training Network.

Responsibilities

* Collaborates with healthcare team members to identify patient needs. Reviews prescriptions which specify the types of orthotic appliances to be made to ensure optimal functional use by the patient. Provides education and training to healthcare team members regarding orthotics.

* Measures, fabricates and adjusts casts and custom orthotics while ensuring minimal patient discomfort, optimal function, fit, comfort, alignment and appearance for patient in compliance with physician's instructions and established procedures. Educates and counsels patient on use of applied device. Documents medical records in a timely manner to ensure record is current.

* Maintains knowledge of rules, regulations, policies, laws, and guidelines that impact the Orthotics area. Develops effective internal controls that promote adherence to applicable state/federal laws, and the program requirements of accreditation agencies and federal, state, and private health plans. Seeks advice and guidance as necessary to ensure proper understanding.

* Identifies ways to improve work processes and improve customer satisfaction. Makes recommendations to supervisor, implements, and monitors results as appropriate in support of the overall goals of the department and PHHS.

* Stays abreast of the latest developments, advancements, and trends in the field of Orthotics by attending seminars/workshops, reading professional journals, actively participating in professional organizations, and/or maintaining certification or licensure. Integrates knowledge gained into current work practices.

* Trains, motivates and assists with selection and evaluation of employees. Functions as a work leader providing operational support and supervision of staff, demonstrating a working knowledge of all job responsibilities under his/her leadership. Performs as back up to staff absences and vacancies, as necessary. Requires an understanding of reporting staff's duties.

* Communicates information typically within and outside the department on matters that involve * obtaining or providing difficult or sensitive information requiring explanation, interpretation, and

* consensus-building for patients and others within the care team

* Influences others within own department regarding policies, practices and procedures

* * May make improvements to existing clinical approaches, practices, and processes

* * Executes clinical processes to solve difficult and complex, problems to meet patient needs and/or

* deliver high-quality care to patients
