Position description

The University of California, Davis, School of Medicine is recruiting an Associate Dean for Assessment, Evaluation, and Scholarship. In addition to leading the assessment of students and evaluation of School of Medicine's programs, including the recently implemented I-EXPLORE curriculum, the Associate Dean will be experienced in educational continuous quality improvement and accreditation. The ideal candidate will possess a track record in medical education research and research mentorship.

This position reports to the Vice Dean for Medical Education and works closely with other Associate Deans in Medical Education, including the Associate Dean for Workforce Innovation and Educational Quality Improvement, Associate Dean for Curriculum, and Associate Dean for Students.

The incoming leader will be assigned 50% effort for leadership activities and administration related to the Associate Dean role. In addition, the Associate Dean for Assessment, Evaluation and Scholarship will need to meet the requirements of a clinical faculty member (including holding a clinical faculty appointment in their trained specialty) or a research faculty member depending on their background and education. Additional duties and faculty rank will be influenced by candidate qualifications and interests, departmental needs, and clinical practice requirements, as applicable.

Duties:

Assessment of Students



  • Design, implementation, and continuous improvement of a comprehensive program of student assessment across the entirety of the curriculum.
  • Work with course and education program leaders to ensure a variety of student assessments that are aligned with School of Medicine outcomes.
  • Work with course and education program leaders to ensure student assessments are aligned with accreditation expectations.
  • Collaborate with information technology to streamline assessment data collection, review, and monitoring.
  • Analyze and report data in a manner that effectively and clearly communicates student performance.
  • Lead data collection, processes, analyses, and reporting of post-graduation outcome data.
  • Provide input into the Medical Student Performance Evaluation.


Program Evaluation



  • Design, develop and execute a school-wide program evaluation in collaboration with the Vice Dean and Education Leadership Team.
  • Participate in standing curriculum committees, meetings, education retreats and other mission-based activities.
  • Ensure program evaluation activities are aligned with LCME, accreditation, and curriculum CQI expectations.
  • Provide ad hoc support to faculty, staff and trainees interested in program evaluation.


Scholarship



  • Lead and contribute to medical education scholarship locally with faculty, staff and trainees.
  • Participate in national organizations relevant to the work and to the advancement of medical education.



Other



  • Serve as a member of the Vice Dean for Education Leadership Team.

  • Collaborate with and support the other Associate Deans with responsibilities in the medical education environment.

Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

  • Candidates must have PhD/MD/DO degree or its non-US equivalent.
  • Active or qualified for licensure in California if clinical faculty.
  • Eligible for appointment at Associate or Full Professor level in appropriate series (ClinX, In-Residence or HSCP).
  • At least three years of experience in higher education, ideally in undergraduate medical education.
  • Experience in designing a program of assessment and assessment tools in higher education.
  • Exceptional communication skills.
  • Experienced in mentoring physician educators in research design, grantsmanship and the development of high-quality educational research papers.

Additional qualifications (required at time of start)

  • Current board certification in trained specialty if clinical faculty.

Preferred qualifications (other preferred, but not required, qualifications for the position)

  • Experience in medical school accreditation and education quality improvement.
  • Experience in data capture, database design, data hygiene, data transfers, and analyses.
  • Ability to develop, use, and improve learning analytics and data displays.
  • Foundational understanding of educational theories and concepts related to learning sciences.
  • Able to manage multiple educational projects simultaneously and work with different teams of educators and educational researchers.
  • Able to conduct or collaborate on qualitative and quantitative analyses.
  • Able to oversee and manage a team in terms of their work progress as well as their continuous professional development.
  • Experience in grant writing and educational research grant funding.
