About the Department
Program Overview The University of Minnesota Physical Activity Program (PAP) Physical Education (PE) courses are designed for students of all abilities, and unless otherwise noted, intended for true novices. These 1-credit activity-specific academic classes allow students to develop a working knowledge of the etiquette, sportspersonship, rules, safety concerns, safe/healthy techniques, game theory, sport culture and regulations related to the specific physical activity through in-class lectures, demonstrations, and active student participation. The PAP is intended to develop students' Physical Literacy through safe and inclusive in-class activities and drills that support the development of techniques and agilities that students will be able to utilize in multiple environments that benefit the healthy development of the whole person. The awareness and knowledge needed to pursue lifelong physical activity is the ultimate goal, so students will have out-of-the-classroom opportunities to engage in this sport/activity culture. This will expose students to the exciting local, national, and international competitive and basic engagement opportunities. The PAP utilizes many of the University's premiere athletic and recreational venues, providing students with an active and dynamic learning environment. Unit Overview The School of Kinesiology advances interdisciplinary knowledge about physical activity and human movement in order to promote lifelong health and well-being in local, national, and global communities.
