Position Purpose
The Director of Track & Field and Cross Country is responsible for all phases of both programs. This includes, but is not limited to, the planning, development, and implementation of activities in the following areas: planning and supervision of team practices and contests; scheduling meets and planning the spring trip; management of budget; control of equipment and supplies; and recruiting, retention, and advisement of student-athletes. The Director is accountable for modeling a professional demeanor as is inherent in higher education and athletics as well as for mentoring student-athletes. This position is responsible for ensuring that all Track & Field and Cross-Country activities support the mission of the College and are in compliance with all College, Ivy League, and NCAA rules and policies.

Required Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

  • Six years competitive experience and/or coaching track & field at the collegiate level.
  • Strong knowledge of track & field/distance training programs, skills and strategies, particularly in the distance events.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of people in a diverse community.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to recruit effectively with no athletic grants and highly selective admissions standards.
  • Commitment to diversity and to serving the needs of a diverse population.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree.
  • Experience coaching track & field in the Ivy League.

Coaching/Mentoring

  • Assign assistant and head coaches to work with specific event groups and/or athletes.
  • Perform annual evaluation of assistant and head coaches.
  • Plan, organize, and conduct individual and team practices, training, and competitions.
  • Teach and implement skills and strategies. Set and communicate appropriate goals and expectations for individuals and team.
  • Maintain team discipline and the highest standard of ethics and sportsmanship.
  • Meet competitive goals for program.
  • Demonstrate a sincere interest in the academic, personal, and physical welfare of each student-athlete; counsel team members and consult with appropriate college staff as necessary for resolution of issues.
  • Contribute positively to the goals of the College and educational experience of student-athletes.

Description
Recruiting

  • Work closely with department administrators to coordinate recruitment activity.
  • Communicate frequently and effectively with admissions representatives.
  • Develop and implement an overall recruiting plan, including but not limited to:

    • Identifying qualified and talented student-athletes;
    • Building and maintaining prospect database;
    • Communicating with prospects by phone, mail, email;
    • Traveling to evaluate prospects, meet parents, and high school coaches, and
    • Organizing campus visits and maintaining knowledge of the College's programs and opportunities to effectively inform prospects.



  • Contribute to the recruitment goals of the College.
  • Monitor all four priority lists.
  • Coordinate planning for filling target spots.
  • Analyze previous classes and project areas to improve.
  • Track home visits, unofficial visits, and official visits.
  • Meet and communicate with admission liaison as needed.

Description
Administration

  • Know and comply with the rules and regulations of the NCAA and Ivy League, and work to stay abreast of rule changes, applications, and interpretations.
  • Actively seek to ensure that staff members, athletes, and athletics representatives are informed of and comply with NCAA and Ivy League rules.
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships.
  • Train, supervise, and evaluate assistant coaches.
  • Assign coaching, recruiting, and administrative responsibilities to assistant coaches and other staff.
  • Coordinate the search for and hiring assistant coaches.
  • Oversee all aspects of the financial management of men's and women's cross country, men's and women's track and field, and friends.
  • Prepare budget recommendations.
  • Plan, monitor, verify, and reconcile, expenditure of funds, within confines of budget.
  • Work with travel coordinator to make arrangements for competition, recruiting, and professional travel. Work with Sport Administrator to develop an appropriate competition schedule.
  • Work cooperatively and effectively with numerous support areas and personnel: facilities and operations, business office, strategic content and brand management, external engagement, athletic trainers, equipment staff, strength and conditioning, and DP2.
  • Work cooperatively and effectively with Sport Administrator.
  • Represent Dartmouth, the athletic department, and the cross-country and track and field programs in a positive manner to various internal and external constituencies including students, parents, faculty, staff, alumni, fans, community, media, etc.
  • Work with Varsity Athletics Communications and Marketing/Promotions to develop informational/promotional materials and events.
  • Actively promote Dartmouth and the cross-country and track and field programs through the media, speaking engagements, camps, clinic, and community involvement.
  • Develop alumni interest in and support for cross-country and track and field through the "Friends" group, alumni events, regular communication, and other means.
  • Effectively encourage financial donations to the program.
