DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

UC Santa Cruz (UCSC) Student Health Services (SHS) is a full-service medical facility offering clinical, educational, and psychological support to UCSC students. SHS is deeply committed to ensuring affordable, well-integrated, multidisciplinary healthcare that effectively supports the university's diverse campus communities through equitable access and culturally competent, high-quality programs and services.

The Primary Care Program includes primary care and same-day care, with the support of on-site radiology, a COLA-accredited high-complexity clinical laboratory, and a campus pharmacy. Other departments include Student Health Outreach and Promotion (SHOP), home of the Condom Co-op; CARE (Center for Advocacy, Resources & Empowerment), the advocacy and prevention education office that supports survivors of sexual assault, stalking, and dating/domestic violence; and Student Insurance Programs.

Student Health Services employs approximately 150 staff including physicians, psychiatrists, case managers, lab scientists, pharmacists, nurses, radiologists, and many other clinical and administrative staff. Student Health Services welcomes staff with interest and experience in working with students with a wide range of ethnic, cultural, and gender identities.

JOB SUMMARY

The Pharmacist, Per Diem for UCSC Student Health Services will dispense drugs prescribed by physicians and other health practitioners and provide information to students about medications and their use. The Pharmacy is supervised by the Pharmacy Director who also serves as the Pharmacist in Charge (PIC).

APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

Budgeted Salary: $83.85/hourly
Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to post a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. The salary shown above is the budgeted amount the University reasonably expects to pay and the salary extended should not exceed this posted amount.

JOB DUTIES

100% - Pharmacy Operations

  • Receives and fills prescriptions
  • Communicates with medical professionals about students and their medications
  • Provides suggestions for over-the-counter medications
  • Accurately measures, prepares, and distributes proper medications to students
  • Keeps track of inventory and maintains pharmacy records
  • Writes prescriptions for Emergency Contraception and OTC nicotine replacement products
  • Provides vaccines
  • Oversees the work of pharmacy technicians
  • Maintains the security of the pharmacy
  • Complies with all state and federal laws and regulations pertaining to pharmacy
  • Backs up POS (Point of Sale) as needed

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an accredited school of pharmacy
  • Possession of current license, in good standing, to practice pharmacy in the State of California
  • Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an accredited school of pharmacy
  • Two (2) years of recent experience in a pharmacy setting
  • Knowledge of pharmacy standards of practice
  • In-depth knowledge of drugs and their potential side effects
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Effective oral communication skills
  • Excellent listening skills
  • Ability to work cooperatively with clinicians and independently with minimal supervision
  • Ability to handle difficult, sensitive or confidential situations
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse groups of people
  • Ability to promote a healthy and pleasant workplace

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Possession of current license, in good standing, to practice pharmacy in the State of California Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an accredited school of pharmacy
  • Must possess CPR/First Aid/AED certification or have the ability to obtain it within 60-calendar days of hire.
  • Selected candidate will be required to successfully complete a pre-hire criminal history background check and a pre-hire credentialing check.
  • Selected candidate will be required to take a TB test within 60 days of hire.
  • Within 30 days: 1) Take HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accessibility Act) training 2) Either possess or obtain Emergency Contraception Certification for prescribing 3) Either possess or obtain Nicotine Replacement continuing education for prescribing
  • Selected candidate will be required to complete training within established time frames as directed including UC compliance training.
  • The selected candidate will be required to work all scheduled hours on-site.
  • Ability to work a variable schedule.
  • Ability to work on-call.
  • Ability to maintain appearance and conduct suitable for working in a professional setting.
  • Will be required to comply with current Student Health Center employee health safety requirements for health care workers as defined by state and federal regulatory agencies; current health safety requirements to be discussed during interview.
