General Purpose of Job: Compounds and dispenses medications and pharmaceutical supplies upon receiving prescriptions from other qualified prescribers, processes information, prepares and files drug charge slips, and performs various other related duties. Essential Duties: This job description is intended to cover the minimum essential duties assigned on a regular basis. Caregivers may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned by their leader. Leadership has the right to alter or modify the duties of the position.
- Under direct supervision of a Registered Pharmacist, weighs, measures, and mixes ingredients compounding and preparing medications, emulsions, liquids, powders, and ointments using such equipment as graduates, balances, mortars, pestles and funnels.
- Fills bottles, capsules, or other package forms with measured amounts of medications according to the prescription.
- Processes prescription information for medications as well as IV solutions.
- Answers the telephone, receiving and relaying messages as needed.
- Maintains the department in a neat, clean, and orderly manner.
- Verifies all orders with the Pharmacist on duty and informs the Pharmacist of any medications that do not seem in line with the patient's condition or previous medications.
- Receives outpatient prescriptions, processes information through computer system, informs Pharmacist of allergies/computer generated drug interactions, obtains appropriate amount of medication from stock, after Pharmacist reviews prescription - appropriately enters information on cash register and finalizes monetary transaction. Completes retail transactions.
- Files physicians' orders and patient drug charges. Files DEA-controlled drug substance usage forms as required.
- Prepares additives for IV solutions and irrigating solutions. Mixes IV additive solutions as required using aseptic technique with the barrier isolator under the direct supervision of a Registered Pharmacist.
- Compounding of Non-sterile medications up to and including Moderate Compounding as defined by USP<795> and Sterile medications up to and including Medium Risk as defined by USP <797>
- Compounding caregivers adhere to the prescription or medical order for the strength, quality and purity of compounding preparations. Compounded products are packaged, labeled and dispensed according to current laws and regulations.
- Makes rounds, picking up orders and delivering prescriptions to the various nursing stations.
- Restock Pyxis machines.
- Prepares medication unit dose packaging.
- Makes deliveries to retail patients in city of St. Johns.
- Able to process prescriptions for medications with risk, evaluation, and management strategies (REMS). Able to follow regulations on sales of ephedrine and pseudoephedrine products.
- Organizes outdated or overstocked medications to ship back to manufacturers for credit. Responsible for checking in medication orders from suppliers (including initialing and dating invoices of OTC, Legend, and class 3-5 medications) under the supervision of a registered pharmacist. Updates prices. May order medications from wholesalers.

Specialized Knowledge and Skills |
Able to pass IV additive training program, if required. Familiar with trade names and generic names of normally stocked drugs. High degree of concentration is necessary when picking drugs for dispensing and typing directions. Able to operate computer terminals, typewriters, calculators and cash registers. Problem solving is minimal, with tasks being repetitive and similar. Some calculations of common dosing is required, especially in IV compounding. |
