Your Opportunity

The position summary states the general nature and purpose of the job. Overall accountabilities are defined in this section.

Leads the regional health improvement strategies. Works as part of the management team to set the direction and strategy as it relates to health and production. Coordinates working relationships with other Smithfield veterinarians, key suppliers, and academic collaborators that will enhance productivity and cost results by performing the following duties.

Core Responsibilities
  • Provide real-time on-site veterinary support to Smithfield Hog Production wean-to-finish and Smithfield Hog Production Sow Operations in all aspects of swine production.
  • Provide input and oversight to system health related improvement programs and production practice quality assurance initiatives.
  • Fully integrates efforts/activities within the framework and consistent with the direction of the production management team and veterinary team.
  • Develop and implement health management programs, including training and follow through.
  • Serve as an effective team member/leader by providing input and direction relative to potential health and production improvement methods.
  • Develop internal/external relationships and partnerships designed to help understand and implement disease control and elimination strategies.
  • Ensure that division wide health related trial work is well designed and analyzed to improve business decisions.
  • Assist in coordinating field research efforts and disseminating the appropriate information that will result in improved health.
  • Provide leadership and support for data-mining and analytical assessments.
  • Represent the interests of the company on boards and committees of regional and national associations, service organizations and others organizations pertinent to the industry
  • Assists with coordination of health SOPs with regional production managers and other health specialists.
  • Provides timely, accurate reports, documentation, and data to internal/external customers.
  • Responsible for being in compliance with all environmental laws and procedures to which Smithfield Hog Production subscribes.
  • Incumbent will be responsible for understanding and complying with company SIPS, EMS and BMS policies and procedures while performing their job duties.
  • Report all environmental issues immediately to their supervisor.
  • Performs all other duties as defined by manager.

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals to perform the essential functions.

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from an accredited school, required.
  • 5+ years experience in veterinary medicine and swine health preferable in large systems, required.
  • Eligible to practice veterinary medicine in states where farms are located within 6 months of hire.
  • Current and valid driver's license with acceptable MVR.
  • Proven excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of research procedures and statistical analyses.
  • Proven working knowledge of swine medicine.
  • Good understanding of disease pathogenesis and laboratory clinical assays.
  • Proven ability to develop and implement programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to use initiative, think independently.
  • Proven time management skills in a multiple project environment.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Word, Excel, and PowerPoint preferred.
  • Must be available for occasional travel.
  • Must be available to work nights and weekends when necessary.
  • Ability to work well with others in fast paced, dynamic environment.
  • Ability to be respectful, approachable and team oriented while building strong working relationships and a positive work environment.
Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Provides leadership and guidance to employees in the department.
  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.
  • Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and assisting in providing appropriate resolutions.

Salary Range

$128,000.00 - $192,125.00
