Launched in 2022 the Eric and Wendy Schmidt Center for Data Science and Environment (DSE) at Berkeley is a partnership between UC Berkeley's Rausser College of Natural Resources (RCNR) and the College of Computing, Data Science, and Society (CDSS), with the financial support of Eric and Wendy Schmidt. The Center combines the power of computing and environmental science with open science principles and a commitment to inclusivity - all towards the purpose of building tangible, replicable, and accessible solutions to problems compromising the health of our environment. Team members in the Center co-create these solutions in direct partnership with those who hold the knowledge and expertise of their local needs and environmental context.

Position Summary

We aim to contribute to the global community who are similarly working to take on these challenges in four key areas:

• Generating ground-breaking computational/data science discoveries motivated by pressing environmental questions;
• Producing scalable solutions to critical threats facing the environment, powered by open-source tools;
• Deploying these solutions widely, taking advantage of modern cloud infrastructure and open data/open software, and maintaining a design philosophy of vendor neutrality to ensure that community needs are prioritized;
• Creating an enhanced pipeline of young environmental leaders connected to local communities and organizations to meet their needs and translate our research findings and technological developments into practical impacts.

The Data Visualization Developer will play a critical role in using creative coding skills to design and build clear and compelling data-enabled web applications for our core projects. The incumbent will be a seasoned data visualization developer with interest and experience complementing teams that address environmental challenges with data science methods and tools.

• Applies advanced front-end development and data visualization experience and understanding of software concepts to plan, design, develop, modify, debug, deploy and evaluate web applications for environmental use cases.
  • Working collaboratively with our program managers and engineers to understand the intended purpose of a data visualization application
  • Designing potential directions that encompass these findings and translate complex data into meaningful interactive figures and experiences
  • Iteratively developing these applications for publication
  • Continuing to enhance and adapt the applications based on new data availability and feedback.
    
• Understands and applies industry practices, open-source community standards and department policies and procedures in depth. May serve as technical lead for multiple software development projects of moderate to broad scope.
• Employs information design and similar human-centered design principles to inclusively engage end-users for participatory / co-creation experiences.
• Specifies, develops and executes complex test plans. Determines source code control techniques and configuration management design and changes.
• Initiates and oversees changes in development, maintenance and system standards. Sets the technical requirements for complex software specifications.

• Advanced knowledge of data visualization and web application development.
• Highly advanced skills associated with software specification, design, modification, implementation and deployment of large-scale scope.
• Ability to develop application in adherence to web accessibility best practices (WCAG)
• Excellent project management skills.
• Demonstrated ability to understand functional needs and how systems can support those needs.
• Advanced experience with identification and use of code libraries and open-source forums.
• Advanced experience with planning for deployment and creation of feedback mechanisms.
• Demonstrated software repository skills.
• Experience developing and executing complex test plans.
• Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills. Demonstrated ability to communicate technical information to technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization.
• Self-motivated and works independently and as part of a team. Able to learn effectively and meet deadlines.
• Demonstrated complex problem solving skills.
• Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training

This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $95,300 - $128,000, annually.
