Emergency Department Technician @ Swedish First Hill

Full Time (36 Hour Week)

Night Shift

12 Hour Shifts

The Emergency Department Technician provides support to the Emergency Department (ED) Nursing and Licensed Independent Practitioner (LIP) staff by performing tasks that assist in the care and treatment of patients with illnesses and injuries. Serves as a liaison among members of the healthcare team, patients and families. Organizes, replaces and maintains inventory and supply levels in the Department. Assists in other department-related activities.

  • Provides patient care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Independent Practitioner (LIP). Anticipates LIP, RN, and patient case needs.
  • Performs basic patient care such as vital signs, patient hygiene, mobility assistance, specimen collection, and preparation of equipment and supplies for procedures.
  • Performs approved orthopedic procedures such as plaster splint applications and other orthopedic splints/devices.
  • Performs basic first aid measures, as well as basic wound care, irrigation, wound prep, and dressing applications.
  • Performs basic patient observation skills and reports significant changes in patient condition to appropriate team member.
  • Connects patients to various monitoring equipment. Performs 12 lead ECG's. Recognizes and responds appropriately to critical arrhythmias.
  • Communicates effectively with all caregivers regarding patient issues and equipment.
  • Communicates in a compassionate manner to patients, families and visitors. Assists patient families and friends in support of patient care and well being.
  • Performs appropriate specimen collection and clinical testing such as hemacues, istats, urine dips and pregnancy urine testing. Uses glucometer to check blood glucose levels.
  • Uses appropriate down-time forms and electronic medical record (EMR) to document pertinent patient data accurately, legibly and concisely per standards.
  • Receives and records laboratory and other patient data reports and conveys information accurately to RN and LIP.
  • Performs phlebotomy according to established standards.
  • Assures completion of required documentation elements. Maintains patient confidentiality.
  • Monitors, orders and restocks unit (central services, stores, linen, non-stock, etc.) with supplies and emergency equipment as indicated.
  • Assists in the patient admitting, transfer, and discharge procedures. Transports patients via wheelchair and stretcher.
  • May perform duties such as telephone, scanning, copying, etc., to assist as needed relative to patient volume.
  • Assists with the facilitation of patient education relative to the treatment plan (i.e., crutch walking instructions).
  • Safely monitors and transports patients to all units unless RN is required for transport.
  • Functions as a team member in de-escalation techniques, restraints application and restraints monitoring.


Required qualifications:



  • H.S. Diploma or GED
  • Upon hire: Washington Medical Assistant Phlebotomist Certification
  • Upon hire: Washington Nursing Assistant Certification License Or
  • Upon hire: Washington Nursing Assistant Registered
  • Upon hire: National Provider BLS - American Heart Association


Preferred qualifications:



  • Training in orthopedic technology desirable.
  • 2 years of EMT and/or two years Emergency Department experience.
