Job Summary

The Department of Community Corrections is currently seeking qualified applicants for a full-time Mental Health Probation Officer. Essential functions include:

  • Supervises criminal defendants and offenders experiencing serious mental illness (SMI) placed on probation supervision by the Court, specifically cases sentenced in Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court.
  • Completes risk assessments, identifies criminogenic risks and treatment needs, and creates case plans, when appropriate.
  • Conducts Mental Health and Substance Abuse assessments and refers for treatment and other court-ordered conditions to guide participants in complying with court-ordered conditions and to encourage positive behavioral and internal change.
  • Conducts criminal history record inquiries through VCIN.
  • Collects and administers urine drug screens and breath alcohol screens.
  • Maintains accurate automated PTCC notes, case files, and data in accordance with federal, state and local standards.
  • Submits Court reports regarding compliance and files/seeks Show Cause and Capias requests, as necessary.
  • Functions as a contributing member of the Probation Team and collaborates with the Domestic Violence Unit within the Department of Community Corrections.
  • Interacts professionally with representatives from the legal community such as Commonwealth's Attorneys, Law Enforcement/ Police Officers, Probation and Pretrial Officers, Defense Attorneys, Judges and Court Personnel.
Hiring salary commensurate with experience.

Minimum Qualifications

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, sociology, psychology, or related field, and a minimum of two (2) years related experience in the criminal justice field.


Job Contingencies and Special Requirements

The successful candidate must undergo and complete a criminal background and DMV record check. An annual DMV record check will be required.

  • Must be willing to supervise seriously mentally ill criminal defendants/ offenders and perform occasional residential visits, as necessary.
  • Must be willing to work with criminal defendants/offenders with violent tendencies.
  • Prefer that the candidate have experience working with seriously mentally ill, criminally involved defendants/offenders.
  • Substantial knowledge of the criminal justice system, court processes, community supervision, and the dynamics of intimate partner violence and family violence.
  • Expansive knowledge/education in mental health, substance abuse and appropriate services/ treatments, medications, preferred.
  • Must have strong writing skills and be able to compile facts and information into concise reports for submission to the Court. The successful candidate will have strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to exercise tact, courtesy and discretion, while being firm, fair and consistent with participants.
  • VCIN certification is required, selected candidate will obtain certification within 90 days of hire.
