ABOUT THE POSITION

Transportation/Traffic Modeler/Planner | Hybrid | Southeast teams (Atlanta, Orlando, Gulf Coast)

VHB's growing Southeast Region is seeking a Transportation/Traffic Modeler/Planner Professional with strong modeling capabilities to join our Transportation Planning & Operations group. The selected candidate will work with a dynamic team of transportation planners and engineers on a variety of public, private, and institutional projects within broad cross-section of markets, including real estate municipal, and state agencies. Our team uses its skills and experience to improve our communities with a sustainable, context-driven and integrated project delivery approach. Our clients include municipalities, FDOT and other state agencies, and private partners who support the development of the places we live, work, recreate and learn.

The Traffic Modeler/Planner will work with our Southeast teams (Atlanta, Orlando, Gulf Coast) to assemble and prepare data for model validation and long-range future year travel forecasts; conduct model validation to required accuracy standards; and prepare the documentation.

Responsibilities:

    Work within a team of professionals in developing mobility and transportation planning and engineering solutions for a multitude of transportation projects
  • Develop and calibrate traffic microsimulation models to evaluate multiple scenarios, explain the results of microsimulation models to clients in an accessible manner, and have the ability to independently accomplish these tasks with minimal oversight
  • Develop, analyze, and evaluate traffic scenarios
  • Prepares planning documents and applications. Coordinates the gathering, compiling, and analysis of data on economic, social, and physical factors affecting land use. Prepares written technical planning documents, applications, justification statements, and reports in conformance with codes, plans, and regulations.
  • Prepares planning studies, including feasibility studies. Develops models and simulations.
  • Research and interpret transportation data, community statistics and demographics to assess the mobility needs of a community
  • Prepare and review technical memoranda and reports
  • Prepare and deliver analysis findings, concerns, and recommendations in a collaborative fashion
  • Ability to perform complex analysis of spatial data using GIS technology (e.g., buffering, spatial overlays, distance calculations)
  • Ability to conduct research and correct complex problems with data using spatial and logical analyses
  • Ability to convert GIS data to and from CAD software format on complex projects.

Skills & Abilities

  • Technical and critical thinking skills.
  • Skilled in industry standard engineering design and analysis systems (e.g., GIS, travel demand models, traffic simulation).
  • Ability to perform sub area validation and able to write scripts to obtain needed specialized model outputs
  • Excellent communication (written and oral) and interpersonal skills
  • Self-motivated
  • Strong writing skills for proposals, technical reports and memoranda
  • The ability to balance multiple concurrent assignments
  • Excel in working in a team environment

Minimum Requirements:

  • 3-5 years of planning experience
  • 5-8+ years of planning experience preferred
  • BS in Planning or related field of study (a master's degree may be substituted for 2 years of experience)
  • Master's degree a plus
  • Experience with travel demand modeling software, such as Cube Voyager, TransCAD, and PTV VISUM
  • Technical writing skills and technical presentation skills
  • AICP Licensure preferred
