About the College/Unit/Department
Part of the Division of Student Affairs, University Housing consists of nearly 2.8 million square feet of facilities and is home to more than 9,000 students. The department employs 220 full-time staff members, 21 graduate assistants and 565 undergraduate student workers. As a self-supporting auxiliary, University Housing operates a $59 million budget derived only from student housing fees and other non-state sources.

Minimum Qualifications
Requires at least a baccalaureate degree in the field. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Five years of experience working within a trade; performing journey level work. General maintenance can be considered a trade within this definition.
  • Two years of experience supervising the work of others. This includes providing feedback on performance and ensuring overall team success.
  • Two years of experience working within a residential, hospitality, medical or other setting where facilities remain occupied 24 hours, seven days a week.
  • Completion of a supervision/leadership training program designed to prepare the candidate for both supervision and leadership.
  • Five years of experience at a journeyman level in any structural trade or skilled trade such as maintenance.
  • Completion of a leadership/management training program designed to prepare the candidate for managerial responsibilities or five years managerial experience.

Position Summary
The Maintenance Supervisor manages ongoing residence hall maintenance and repairs in a zone housing between 1,200 and 3,500 residents in multiple buildings. The position is expected to provide regular consultation and support to various residence life staff, facilities staff, and administrative/management staff. They will select, train, and supervise a team of five to eight individuals and manage their workload. They will also coordinate with Facilities Management Division and outside vendors to perform work in facilities.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

  • Knowledge of the standard methods equipment, materials, tools, and practices of the structural and skilled trades (such as maintenance).
  • Knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing maintenance used in facilities.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of structural and skilled trades.
  • Knowledge of building codes associated with facilities.
  • Skills associated with the effective supervision of skilled workers.
  • Ability to interpret construction and as-built documents.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to provide effective written and oral communication.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other university personnel at multiple levels.

  • Lift and move items weighing at least 40 pounds.
  • Safely drive a UGA state vehicle, as necessary.

Supervision and Work Management

  • Select, train, supervise, and evaluate a team of staff consisting of approximately five to eight individuals that may include: Senior Trades Workers, Systems Technicians, Skilled Trades Workers, and Utility Workers.
  • Actively engage in the development, engagement & retention of each staff member.
  • Utilize the work order system (Integrated Workplace Management) to assign work, monitor the status of work orders, and make sure accurate documentation is provided within work orders.
  • Contact and coordinate with Facilities Management Division and outside vendors to perform work as needed within facilities.

Administrative duties

  • Purchase materials such as tools, appliances, and parts along with the payment process for services performed by outside vendors.
  • Respond to residents' and other stakeholders' concerns related to facilities management issues.
  • Serve on-call for maintenance staff.
  • Assist in the preparation of annual operating and plant fund budgets. Maintain established operating budgets.
  • Assist in long-term planning of facilities.
  • Maintain records pertaining to workplace health and safety, along with informing staff of any health or safety concerns within the facilities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
