Position description
Position Summary

Using a blend of creative, administrative, and analytical skills, the Learning Services Coordinator collaborates closely with colleagues in the Research & Learning Services (R&LS) unit to enhance students' information literacy and deliver effective library instruction and reference services. They create, manage, and evaluate instructional materials and learning objects in partnership with librarians, ensuring their continued effectiveness and accessibility. This position oversees online tools for instruction and reference, such as LibApps, focusing on coordinating access, maximizing functionality, and sharing best practices to support internal users. Additionally, they communicate library events and resources through appropriate library and campus channels and gather and analyze data related to instruction, reference, and outreach services for reporting, decision-making, and advocacy.


Primary Duties
Instruction and Learning Support [50%]

  • Prepares, manages, integrates, and evaluates instructional materials ensuring they are current, designed effectively, and accessible in a variety of formats, and coordinates regular updates to provide consistent and relevant content for library users.

  • Cultivates familiarity with CatCourses, the campus' course management system (CMS), and supports colleagues in its use.

  • Creates and maintains documentation to support ongoing updates to and creation of instructional materials.

  • Manages and monitors online technology/software used for instruction, reference, and outreach purposes, (e.g.: Springhare's LibApps Platform, Brandwatch), provides training, contacts Library IT and vendors for troubleshooting, assesses changes, and maintains documentation of workflows and best practices.

  • Coordinates timely and accurate planning and scheduling of instruction requests, workshops, and events in collaboration with unit colleagues and Library Administrative Services.

  • Leads instructional workshops with lesson design support from unit colleagues.
  • Provides reference services in various modes.


Communication/Outreach [30%]

  • Creates communications to advertise and highlight R&LS unit activities and impact (e.g. through brainstorming, content review, email list compilations, etc.).
  • Regularly participates in events and outreach activities to support the work of the unit and interface with students and other campus community members.
  • Prepares and posts content regularly for the library's website, calendar, UC Merced Connect app, campus calendar, social media channels, and other channels as appropriate, and liaises with campus partners as appropriate.
  • Provides support and offers training to other units in their promotion of library services, spaces, resources, people, and events and facilitates communication requests.

  • Contributes to library communication strategies; stays attuned to effective communication practices and makes recommendations for improvements.

  • When assigned, oversees student employee work, providing training, assignments, and feedback.


Assessment [15%]

  • Collects and analyzes data, creates visualizations to inform decision-making, improve services, and demonstrate value.
  • Monitors and regularizes the ongoing collection of instruction, reference, and outreach statistics, including instructional materials usage data, and coordinates with colleagues to ensure timely, consistent, and relevant data collection.

  • Submits data on behalf of the Research & Learning Services team for periodic reporting purposes.
  • Contributes and helps implement new processes, solutions, or tools to improve assessment efforts.



Other Duties [5%]

  • Serves on library and university committee(s), with supervisor approval.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Basic qualifications

* A Master's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Additional qualifications

* Possesses an ability to effectively communicate information in a variety of formats especially online environments.

* Demonstrates proficiency in the use of HTML and Microsoft Windows-based computer programs especially Excel; possesses an ability to learn, master, and implement new technologies.

* Demonstrates problem-solving skills to address challenges and propose solutions.

* Demonstrates effective data collections methods and excellent analysis skills.

* Evidence of effectively managing, documenting, and improving processes.

* Takes initiative and exhibits an ability to prioritize work in an environment with multiple functions.

* Exemplifies excellent customer service skills whether to internal or external customers.

* Demonstrates experience providing training or instruction with the ability to adapt to specific audiences.

* Maintains complete discretion, confidentiality, sensitivity, and professional judgment.

Preferred qualifications

* Demonstrates knowledge of learning theories and/or instructional design.

* Demonstrates knowledge of and interest in using library online databases and resources.

* Prior experience in academic libraries, including Reference training and support.

* Experience with graphic design and/or creation of social media content.

* Prior supervision of students or leadership of project teams or initiatives.
