Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) invites applications for a full-time Communications Officer (Dispatcher) to join our Public Safety Team. The Public Safety Communications Officer receives both emergency and non-emergency calls from the MSOE community and the public and dispatches appropriate emergency or non-emergency services to necessary locations.

Shift

We respect your private time, so we offer consistent work hours. The days/hours are Thursday through Monday, 12:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. Off days are Tuesday and Wednesday. Occasional overtime provided (and sometimes required) to fill open shifts.


Essential Job Functions

  • Receive non-emergency calls from the MSOE community and the public for assistance
  • Receive emergency calls from the MSOE community and the public requesting police, fire, medical or other emergency services
  • Determine the nature and location of the emergency, determine priorities, and dispatch Public Safety Patrol Officers or other emergency personnel as necessary in accordance with established procedures
  • Maintain contact with all Public Safety personnel on assignments
  • Maintain status and location of all Public Safety personnel on duty
  • Receive requests for information regarding vehicle registration and provide pertinent data
  • Monitor Public Safety radio frequencies
  • Operate a variety of communications equipment, including radio consoles, telephones, and computer systems
  • Monitor direct emergency alarms and dispatch Public Safety Patrol Officers or other emergency personnel as necessary in accordance with established procedures
  • Monitor the Public Safety video surveillance system and dispatch Public Safety Patrol Officers in accordance with established procedures
  • Record the names of all guests visiting MSOE students and collect their identification
  • Distribute department keys to members of the MSOE community
  • Availability to work evenings, weekends, holidays and overtime


Other Duties and Responsibilities

  • Inventory lost and found property turned into the Public Safety Department
  • Assist the Lead Communications Officer with updating the Public Safety Standard Operating Procedures
  • Dispatch SHIP calls for service when a student employee isn't available
  • Provide breaks for Public Safety Residence Hall Officers during their assigned shift
  • Assist Public Safety Patrol Officers with checking panic alarms, hold-up alarms, and emergency phones
  • Assist with Evacuation Drills

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Previous Public Safety dispatching experience preferred but we will highly consider all hard working, motivated individuals who have a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must be available to work weekends and holidays as your shift requires


Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before others. Ability to effectively communicate in both written and oral form.
  • Ability to use numbers to solve problems involving concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out written or oral instructions.


Physical Demands

  • While performing the duties of this job the employee is largely sedentary, the ability to move is required. The employee is occasionally required to traverse within their work area as well as other areas on campus.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, use hands, and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, and reach with arms.
  • The employee must also have the ability to handle several tasks simultaneously.


Work Environment

This job operates in a professional office environment. This role uses standard office equipment, including but not limited to computers, phones, photocopiers, and filing cabinets.
