Sr. Specialist, Volunteer Engagement

We partner with volunteers to accomplish our work. Staff members engage volunteers through effective and timely communications, facilitating meaningful opportunities, and continually seeking and providing feedback for reciprocal growth and learning.

The Sr. Specialist, Volunteer Engagement builds and sustains relationships with volunteers that increase personal and organizational capacity. This position stewards volunteer relationships, promoting volunteer engagement and building volunteer career paths. This position is also responsible for implementation of local volunteer programs, including office volunteers, MS Ambassadors, and serving as a resource for the internship program.

The Sr. Specialist, Volunteer Engagement is responsible for all aspects of event volunteer engagement for events and volunteer relationships in assigned portfolio (typically 17 - 26 events and 1500 volunteer relationships). This position must effectively collaborate with the fundraising and event production teams, committees, and logistics companies (where applicable) to deliver well-supported events marked by strong risk management practices, engagement of skilled and specialty volunteers, and a strategy to recognize event volunteers.

Essential Function/Responsibility

Volunteer relationship management and cultivation (50%): Build and sustain relationships with volunteers that increase personal and organizational capacity

  • Understand vision for volunteer engagement and organization; identify, recruit, cultivate and engage volunteers who will move us closer to this vision

  • Identify engagement opportunities and a career path for key volunteers, support volunteers along their journey with the organization

  • Recruit and manage interns to expand reach

  • Identify, cultivate, and recruit MS Ambassadors

  • Cultivate relationships with key event volunteers to increase retention and engagement

  • Recognize volunteers, ensuring they feel valued and appreciated for their contributions

  • Serve as subject matter expert on event volunteer recruitment and engagement for assigned territory

  • Collaborate with colleagues on the development team to identify and cultivate the connection between volunteerism and fundraising through corporations, groups, and volunteer match programs

  • Identify and cultivate volunteers for the pipeline, building relationships and sharing opportunities so volunteers engage at their full potential

Event volunteer recruitment (30%): Lead implementation of volunteer engagement efforts for assigned territory, increasing the number of Society volunteers through recognizing and recruiting talent

  • Lead event recruitment and engagement for assigned portfolio through identifying new volunteers and community groups, while also connecting and cultivating past volunteers

  • Implement event communication strategy, including successful collaboration between fundraising, volunteer engagement, and logistics staff working on events

  • Provide clear and consistent communication with volunteers prior to and at the event: work with volunteers to determine appropriate volunteer position; confirm placement; provide event details, duties, and expectations; train and orient to their role; determine opportunities for engagement in other areas of our work

  • Implement risk management policies and guidelines, including background check process

  • Ensure day of event volunteer plans are implemented; identify and train staff to support day of event volunteers

  • Ensure accurate day-of event volunteer data is obtained and recorded

  • Recognize key event volunteers, ensuring they feel valued and appreciate for their contributions

Other volunteer engagement (20%): serve as a single point of entry to the organization for volunteers, promoting volunteer engagement as a capacity building strategy

  • Engage volunteers across all functions, effectively communicating and facilitating meaningful opportunities across the organization; actively participate in relationship strategy discussions, including Relationship Review meetings

  • Lead volunteer engagement project teams and serve on volunteer and community engagement project teams that improve our strategy, tools and resources

  • Be knowledgeable of all opportunities to engage in our work in assigned market

  • Implement centrally produced tools and resources to create a consistent volunteer experience across the organization

  • Execute volunteer recognition strategy, including working with market leader to identify and nominate volunteers for national and local awards

  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  • Three or more years of volunteer engagement experience, marked by year over year growth in relationships

  • Exceptional organizational and time-management skills

  • Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills

  • Strong oral and written communication skills

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, projects and priorities effectively

  • Demonstrated initiative and motivation

  • Ability to manage difficult or complex situations and/or relationships with confidence and diplomacy

  • Ability to establish strong collaborative relations and work with others in a cooperative and effective manner

Technical/Other

  • Computer knowledge and experience in MS Office suite. Ability to quickly learn new software is desired. Database experience preferred but not required.
  • This position will be required to drive/travel on Society business. Candidate must possess a valid driver's license, proof of insurance and reliable transportation. The Society does run motor vehicle checks for all positions which require driving and the applicant must meet the Society guidelines

Compensation & Benefits:

The estimated hiring compensation range for this role is $29.00-$34.61 per hour ($52,800-$63,000 annually based on a 35-hour work week) Final offers will be based on the candidate'sgeographic location and consider career experience and may vary from this range due to these and other factors.
