Payroll Manager

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the Payroll (Domestic and Global) Team and manage all functions related including:

    • Accurate and timely payroll to members along with tax filings and payments to appropriate government authorities

    • Proper calculation and submission of garnishments (child support/levy) and other deductions

    • Expat payrolls along with foreign and domestic relocation expenses including associated gross-up calculations

  • Develop team members through 1:1 sessions, cross-training, project work and other opportunities as well as direct and prioritize team workloads

  • Recruit and retain top Payroll talent along with evaluating and monitoring the team's performance

  • Minimize risk and protect company assets through internal controls, systems and process oversight

  • Ensure compliance with company policies and government regulations as it relates to Payroll

  • Work with cross functional teams by leading projects and strategic initiatives including supporting mergers and acquisitions

  • Direct and oversee system testing for upgrades and implementations

  • Participate in networking groups and be a payroll subject matter expert; understanding full business processes for the Time-to-Pay and Hire-to-Retire value streams

  • Be an integral part of the month-end close process by overseeing accruals, journal entries, reconciliations and necessary adjustments to ensure financial statements are accurate and reliable

  • Administer Johnsonville's monthly Great Performance Share bonus program, including annual system configuration

  • Manage third-party vendor relationships, contracts and pricing

  • Represent functional area for various audits (year-end financial, workers' compensation, payroll, tax, and corporate social responsibility) along with directing requests and preparing and reviewing data

  • Develop and manage departmental budget

Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or Finance or a minimum of 10 years payroll experience required

  • Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) Certification (highly desired), actively pursuing or ready to pursue

Experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years experience leading and developing a payroll team required

  • Multi-state and local tax experience required

  • Experience with global payrolls required (Southeast Asia a plus)

Skills and Competencies:

  • Demonstrated problem solving ability with focus on continuous improvement

  • Detail-oriented and comfortable working in a fast-paced rapidly changing environment

  • Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate and build positive relationships across all levels of the organization

  • Ability to direct a team, manage multiple priorities, and achieve deadlines

  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Office applications

  • Working knowledge within the SAP ERP Finance, SAP HR/PR and Success Factors modules a plus

  • Strategic thinker with well-grounded understanding of best-in-class industry trends

  • Leadership Skills, Team Development, Change Agent, Global Mindset and Customer Focus

  • 4 key criteria

    • 1) Deep payroll knowledge (5 years of experience)

      • Ideally CPP or pursuing CPP

      • Most important factor / Table stakes

    • 2) Team leadership

      • Leads a team (not a delegater, but a leader)

      • Develop and inspire team

      • Build & foster relationships across the organization

    • 3) Global mindset

      • Understanding of (not expert in) international payroll issues

      • Willing to get hands dirty and understand more about this process

      • Coordinate with internal resources and those abroad to make sure this gets done right

    • 4) System implementation

      • This will happen within the next 6 months

      • Hire to retire system - person should have an understandingof end to end payroll process

      • Needs to show ability to "stick to their guns" and advocate for payroll function as the system is implemented
