Cytology Lab Assistant (Laboratory Tech I)

Job Summary:



This full-time University of Colorado Staff Cytology Laboratory Assistant position in a busy clinical laboratory setting providing testing of gynecologic samples, body fluids, Fine Needle Aspirates and biopsies. This position is responsible for accessioning patient samples, processing samples using various technical protocols, routine instrument maintenance, and some clerical duties. This position requires strong communication and teamwork skills as it interacts on daily basis with cytologist, pathologists, residents, fellows, clinicians, and various hospital personnel. This position requires following all federal, state, institutional and laboratory policies, and Standard Operation Procedures for methodologies used in processing specimens. Technician is expected to exercise sound independent judgment, while seeking appropriate guidance in solving non-routine problems.

Key Responsibilities:



  • Receiving, accessioning and labeling of gynecologic and non-gynecologic specimens using Laboratory Information System
  • Applying approved cytopreparation methods to process cytology specimens and sending out selected samples for ancillary testing
  • Operating and troubleshooting laboratory instruments and equipment and performing routine preventive maintenance
  • Utilizing and maintaining cytology stains, reagents and chemicals, including their preparation, storage, and correct disposal.
  • Maintaining, organizing stock inventory, and requesting laboratory supplies
  • Providing support with various administrative tasks and handling phone inquiries
  • Reporting patient safety issues and specimen deficiencies
  • Participating in orientation of cytology residents and medical students in the subject of cytopreparation

Onsite - this role is expected to work onsite and is located in Aurora, Colorado.

Qualifications:



Minimum Qualifications:



  • High School Diploma and two (2) years of laboratory experience in clinical setting

    • Substitution: University, college, or non-correspondence school coursework related to science and/or laboratory work may substitute for the experience on a year-for-year basis.




Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:



  • An Associate's degree or higher biology, natural sciences, or in a related field.
  • Experience working with students, staff and faculty in a teaching hospital environment

Anticipated Pay Range:



The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as $49,728 - $57,682 (40th% posting max)

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position may be eligible for overtime compensation, depending on the level.
