DESCRIPTION

UC San Diego Health Interpreter Services is part of the Office of Experience Transformation.

Under the supervision of the Manager for Interpreter Services and the Director for Experience Operations, the Medical Interpreter II independently performs general medical interpreting/translation for the patient care staff, Limited English Proficiency (LEP) patients and their families. This role will assess and monitor the patient's understanding of the information conveyed and keep the clinical team members informed as to the level of that understanding. The medical interpreter can suggest referrals to medical staff, clinical social workers, chaplains, patient services representatives.

The medical interpreters are looked up as subject matter experts and are responsible for accurately conveying information between patient and provider. Must maintain confidentiality, impartiality, professional integrity, and abide by the code of interpreters' ethics. In addition to conveying information to the patient, the medical interpreter manages the flow of communication to maintain accuracy and to build rapport between the provider and the patient. Additionally, the medical interpreter translates discharge instructions, records services provided in a daily activity report, and performs related duties as assigned.

Other duties include accurately translating text, applying a thorough knowledge of languages including recent vocabulary, new technical terms, and slang. Administrative duties include completing the necessary paperwork in a timely fashion, reporting problems or conflicts to the supervisors, and attending department and divisional meetings.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Completion and certification from an independent medical interpreter school or program.

  • Four (4) years experience as a Medical Interpreter.

  • Bilingual in both Spanish and English.

  • Experience with computer programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook

  • Experience working with mobile devices such as iPads, tablets, and pagers

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree
  • Certification from the Commission for Healthcare Interpreters (CCHI) or National Board of Certification of Medical Interpreters
  • Member of the California Healthcare Interpreting Association
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Must be able to work various hours and locations based on business needs.
  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $57,232 - $75,460 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $27.41 - $36.14

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
