Description

The Dartmouth Presidential Cluster on Breaking the Neural Code invites applications for a staff Research Scientist. The Cluster is dedicated to the computational and neurophysiological underpinnings of human behavior and health. Our goal is to combine analyses of large-scale datasets with novel scientific studies of brain imaging, electrophysiology, and neuromodulation to deliver next-generation models and tools for human neuroscience.

We seek a motivated, high-performing scientist with strong interests in analytics and human neuroscience to join our team. Competitive candidates will possess strong data science and computational skills and a desire and ability to work as part of collaborative, multidisciplinary research teams. The successful candidate will:

(a) lead projects modeling relationships among multimodal brain data and affective/motivational, cognitive, genetic/genomic, and clinical characteristics in large-scale datasets (e.g., the UK Biobank, ABCD, HCP, ROS-MAP, and A2CPS projects);

(b) integrate models and findings from these studies with new studies linking neuroimaging, neuromodulation, and social and emotional function;

(c) lead publications on these topics; and

(d) transition to leading a collaborative and/or independent research program on related topics.

Key Accountabilities:

Research (70%)

  • Lead advanced data analyses (e.g., machine learning and deep learning) in collaboration with Cluster-associated researchers
  • Lead publication of scientific papers
  • Assist in preparation of collaborative manuscripts and co-author manuscripts
  • Actively develop skills, knowledge, and abilities to maintain knowledge of best practices in neuroimaging data processing and analysis.
  • Write and lead research grants as Principal Investigator, with support

Computing and Data Management (30%)

  • Maintain and manage storage of large datasets on RC high-performance computing array and facilitate access for authorized researchers
  • Develop and maintain documentation on Research Computing use, pipelines, pathways, and best practices
  • Facilitates availability of specialized software and analysis tools on RC systems
  • Assist collaborating researchers with integration of new processing and analysis techniques into data processing and analysis pipelines
  • Identify opportunities for improvements and available datasets for collaborative use, and anticipate future data storage needs

Qualifications

Research Scientists have several ranks and promotion opportunities. The appointment rank will be determined according to experience and the scope of initial responsibilities.

Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in relevant technical field (computer science, engineering, physics, mathematics, neuroscience)
  • Proficient in programming languages relevant to neuroimaging (e.g., bash, python, R, Matlab)
  • Proficient in machine learning and/or deep learning tools (e.g., scikit-learn, tensorflow, pytorch)
  • Proficiency in developing and deploying containerized applications (e.g., Docker, Singularity)
  • Proficiency in deploying jobs on cloud compute platforms (e.g., AWS) and high-performance computing (e.g., SLURM)
  • Experience with human neuroimaging data analysis with relevant software (e.g., FSL, SPM, ANFI, FreeSurfer) and standards (BIDS)

Preferred Qualifications

  • 4 years of relevant development/laboratory/ programming experience
  • Portfolio of analytic/software projects related to neuroimaging and data science (e.g., on Github)
  • First-author publications in data science and neuroimaging
