JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB SUMMARY:

Responsible for identifying, engaging, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding current and prospective planned (legacy) giving donors. Responsible for cultivating relationships with, and providing excellent donor service to, Legacy Society members and prospects, and Retire United volunteers who include many top community leaders and high-level donors. Additional responsibilities include supporting the Leadership and Major Gifts programs, and Donor Network and Corporate teams through the lens of building the Legacy Giving program.

The successful candidate will demonstrate exceptional professionalism and discretion; have a working knowledge of all legacy giving vehicles and opportunities; and will be able to articulate the benefits of legacy giving to donors, to the organization and our community over the long term.

With a strong alignment with United Way's culture and mission, and working closely with leadership, Manager of Individual Giving, and the Resource Development (RD) team members, this role is responsible for developing a pipeline of donors who will ensure the future of United Way through legacy gifts of all types.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBLITIES Essential job functions and expected performance standards include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Lead efforts in securing new and newly revealed planned gift intentions, including bequests, charitable remainder trusts, charitable lead trusts, and other complex non-cash gifts and deferred giving vehicles.
  • Lead the discovery and identification process for prospective planned giving donors by utilizing our CRM and constituent data to research and reveal the most likely planned giving donors.
  • Assess the current state of the legacy giving program; partner with data and IT teams to create tracking and documentation processes in Andar; work with CFO to document current and realized legacy giving commitments in Andar.
  • Lead and develop strategies to recruit, cultivate and/or steward legacy giving donors and qualified prospects through marketing materials, working with other Resource Development staff, planning events and other engagement opportunities.
  • Confirm and maintain proper stewardship and recognition to current and prospective legacy donors.
  • Sets goals on and follows up with assigned prospects and accounts.
  • Maintain detailed and accurate account information in the CRM (Andar).
  • Partner closely with CFO on legal and ethical requirements of planned giving agreements, assist with documentation of CFO's work in terms of paperwork, documentation, and reporting.
  • Serve as internal expert on legacy giving opportunities and host training sessions for RD staff and volunteers.
  • Participate in continuing education opportunities and remain up to date on current legacy giving practices.
  • Work with marketing and communications team to promote legacy giving gifts and to "relaunch" the Legacy Society at United Way including promotion plan, digital presence, materials, etc.
  • Utilize United Way Worldwide and other United Ways around the country to identify and implement strategies and tactics that have yielded success.
  • Work with community volunteers to identify clients to leverage existing community relationships and identify the decision makers within the organizations.



Retire United and Legacy Society

  • Develop and implement effective strategies to increase contributions from retired individuals identified as Retire United Members.
  • Identify prospects for and manage recruitment of Retire United Advisory Committee members.
  • Create and manage Retire United information included in United Way newsletters, communications sent to Retire United members year-round and social media outlets.
  • Work closely with board volunteers working on legacy giving and provide comprehensive support which includes advising, individualized support, tracking and prompting follow up, ensuring notes are updated, and other types of support based on each volunteer's needs.
  • Support and execute Legacy Society stewardship plans under the President's annual Individual Giving Communications Plan.
  • Committee Management

    • Manage relationships with and provide excellent customer service to approximately 20 committee members.
    • Work with division co-chairs to establish the direction of the Retire United Committee and subcommittees.
    • In collaboration with Volunteer Engagement, establish and manage event timelines and registration.
    • Organize routine co-chair meetings, quarterly Advisory Committee meetings, subcommittee meetings, and event meetings as necessary for Retire United.





Expected Outcomes: Build and maintain relationships with current and prospective legacy giving donors as appropriate. Effectively communicate United Way's value-add to all constituents. Integrate all aspects of United Way's resource development strategy. Demonstrate effective campaign and resource development leadership. Increase committed and realized gifts from legacy donor base and prospects.

JOB REQUIREMENTS: QUALIFICATIONS AND COMPETENCIES

  • Requires experience in fundraising and demonstrated success in soliciting and securing major gifts (experience in securing legacy gifts preferred).
  • Experience developing expansive relationships with donors and volunteers.
  • High comfort level interfacing with business and community leaders, plus strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse audiences and across generations.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement strategies to drive best practices and maximize outcomes.
  • Strong contacts within United Way of Greater Milwaukee & Waukesha County's four county footprint; strong relationships and knowledge of Waukesha County philanthropic landscape preferred.
  • Excellent communication (verbal & written) skills. Ability to communicate not only with donors and volunteers, but with other team members across our organization.
  • Excellent planning and time management skills with the ability to successfully manage multiple projects. Project Management experience desirable.
  • Perseverance and willingness to take on impressive challenges. High-energy, inspiring team leader and member.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Outlook, Word, Teams, PowerPoint and Outlook Calendar.
  • Good understanding of group dynamics and group facilitation skills.
  • Effective analytical and problem-solving skills.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's degree related to non-profit management, marketing, sales, communications, management or business, human services, and/or philanthropy.
  • 6+ years related experience, or equivalent experience in fundraising and individual stewardship experience; may be substituted by CFRE credential or demonstrated planned giving success.
  • At least five (5) years supervisory or volunteer management experience.
  • Minimum of three (3) years professional experience working in a non-profit organization in a "high end" donor fundraising capacity.
