Position Purpose
Under general supervision, the Bottling Maintenance Technician - Journey monitors, troubleshoots, repairs, adjusts, installs, maintains, operates, tests, or otherwise services winery production equipment in accordance with proper safety procedures and industry best practices. This equipment includes automated machines, servo-mechanical, electro-mechanical, or electro-pneumatic machinery in all of bottling operations. This position performs a variety of specialized work and highly diversified duties, in one or more of the following areas: Bottling Lines, Tetra Pak Lines, Bag in the Box Lines, and Canning Lines. Utilizes skills, knowledge, and technical abilities independently or as part of a team to collaborate and contribute to the continuous improvement of enterprise-wide productivity, quality, safety, and cost-saving metrics.
Essential Duties
- Collaborates with other stakeholders and third-party providers to ensure a safe working environment as it relates to tools/equipment, training, work environment, unsafe acts, identifying potential issues or other related safety items
- Works cohesively with Bottling Supervisors, Production Managers, Bottling Manager, QC & QA
- Cleans, lubricates, repairs, or adjusts parts, pumps, vessels, equipment, or machinery using hand tools or specialized equipment
- Repairs, reworks, or calibrates hydraulic, pneumatic, power transmission, and conveyance assemblies or systems to meet operational specifications or needs
- Observes, measures, or tests the operation of machinery or equipment to diagnose malfunctions using PLC I/O indicators, HMIs, tachometers, or other testing devices
- Analyzes test results, machine error messages, blueprints, repair manuals, or parts catalogs, and information obtained from operators to diagnose, solve, and correct equipment problems
- Tests electrical systems or continuity of circuits in electrical wiring, equipment, or fixtures, using testing devices, such as ohmmeters, megohmeter, voltmeters, and ammeters
- Operates newly repaired machinery or equipment to verify the adequacy of repairs
- Sets up or changes over machine parts and attachments according to production specifications using handtools or other specialized equipment
- Records work activities, parts or materials used, and orders or creates requisitions for new parts or materials as necessary
- Performs troubleshooting on bottling line fillers, capper, corkers, de-palletizers and case packers
- Basic troubleshooting of PLC/drives and VFD's
- Performs troubleshooting on bag in the box fillers, sealers, case packer, and robots (Manteca)
- Performas troubleshooting on canning fillers, seamers, and packaging equipment (Geyserville)
- Reads wiring schematics and diagrams for all equipment
- Maintains all winery bottling room equipment both Mechanical and Electrical systems
- Responds to emergency situations in order to resolve issues in a timely manner
- Replaces faulty or expired parts when necessary
- Provides critical support of production schedules ensuring that customer delivery commitments are met
- *Maintains Boiler/Compressors and water softeners (Manteca)
- Detects malfunctions and creates and implements plans to resolve them
- Handles troubleshooting and repairs systems across a broad spectrum of Bottling

Minimum Requirements
Education and Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent required; AA/AS degree in mechanical, electrical, or industrial maintenance a plus
- Completion of a craft apprenticeship, or an equivalent number of years of education and production maintenance experience; Winery experience is preferred
- 7 years' experience in specialized field of knowledge
Certificates and Licenses
- Acceptable driver's history with valid driver's license
- Related vocational, trade-school or ROP program completion preferred
- Basic electrical course required
- Welding Certifications a plus
- Machine shop a plus
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Possess very in-depth knowledge and understanding of all components and theory of operation
- Understands how electricity travels, AC and DC currents, single phase and three phase circuits and series and parallel circuits, as well as Ohms Law
- Ability to read basic wiring diagrams
- Ability to use multi-meters to read voltage, current and resistance values. Must be able to troubleshoot basic electrical circuits
- Understanding of Bottling lines and Bag in the box lines (Manteca)
- Understanding of Bottling lines and Canning line (Geyserville)
- Mechanical - Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance
- Physics - Knowledge and prediction of physical principles, laws, their interrelationships, and applications to understanding fluid and material dynamics, as well as mechanical principles
Working Conditions
- Manufacturing plant/production floor environment with occasional travel
- Required to drive automotive vehicle or equipment

- Required to wear PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)
- Must be able to pass fit test and perform work while wearing respirators
- Exposure to varying levels of dust, chemicals, fumes, gases, and noisy equipment
- Occasionally may be required to lift and carry cases of wine
- Exposure to standard maintenance material including batteries, lubricating fluids, paints, solvents, etc.
- Exposure to machinery, forklifts, and related production equipment

The pay range for this position is $29.18 to $45.69. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role.
