JOB SUMMARY

Specialized and skilled leader for a non-credited physical education program. Creates and implements physical education programming for participants, may serve as a lead or mentor for other program instructors and may be required to provide instruction. Program instructors at this level are required to demonstrate considerable discretion, initiative and independence to resolve issues and perform other duties as assigned.

APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

Budgeted Salary: Salary By Agreement $50 - $60/hour. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.
Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to post a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. The salary shown above is the budgeted amount the University reasonably expects to pay and the salary extended should not exceed this posted amount.

JOB DUTIES

75% -

  • Plans, organizes and implements physical education programming
  • Schedules use of recreational facilities and advises and assists individuals and groups with problems related to scheduled athletics and recreation activities.

15% -

  • Maintains files, records and prepares reports as necessary.
  • Ensures compliance with assigned budget.
  • Oversees inventory, storage, budget and maintenance of physical education equipment.

5% -

  • Participates in required professional development activities.
  • Keeps current on instructional methods, techniques and skills through continuing education.

5% -

  • Implements program policies and procedures.
  • Reports safety issues to appropriate personnel and recommends improvements.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or equivalent certification / experience / training
  • Entrepreneurial spirit and ability to develop original ideas. Creative thinking skills to resolve issues. Creative problem solving skills.
  • Highly effective verbal communication skills in the English language.
  • Highly effective written communication skills in the English language.
  • Proficiency in the use of basic computer applications relevant to job duties.
  • Knowledge of campus policies and procedures.
  • Specialized knowledge of program activity and industry best practices.
  • Service orientation and Client service minded.
  • Possesses/demonstrated sound judgment and good decision-making skills. Critical thinking skills.
  • Experience in program management.
  • Leadership and interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively across the organization, internally and externally.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
  • Certification to instruct in the applicable recreational sports program or equivalent experience preferred.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
  • Must possess CPR/First Aid/AED certification or have the ability to obtain it within 60-calendar days of hire.
  • Must possess a valid license to drive in the state of California and be able to participate in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) pull notice program.
  • Ability to work long periods of time at a computer with or without accommodation.
  • Ability to work long periods of time in wilderness conditions and to travel to remote areas.
  • Ability to work in conditions of variable temperature/weather with possible exposure to strong, unpleasant odors, high levels of noise and vibrations, and exposure to dust and allergens.
  • The selected candidate will be required to work all scheduled hours on-site.
  • Ability to work a variable schedule.
  • Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends as directed.
  • Selected candidate will be required to complete training within established time frames as directed including UC compliance training.
  • Ability to travel to multiple work locations on and off campus.
  • Ability to travel within a defined regional or service area.
  • Ability to travel nationally.
  • Ability to maintain appearance and conduct suitable for working in a professional setting.
