Job Summary

Quality Assurance Engineer Supervisor

Under direction of the Associate Director of Quality Research within the Air Quality Research Center, the Research and Development Engineer will be a member of the Quality Assurance and Special Projects research team. Design, conduct, manage, and complete quality assurance activities for two nationwide air quality monitoring networks (300+ sites), with data from over 100,000 samples collected annually (resulting in over 1.7 million datums). Develop, design and implement qualitative and quantitative quality assurance measures Supervise two staff members to achieve these objectives. Coordinate with the Laboratory Manager, Spectroscopist, and Data Group to enhance quality control (QC) checks and remedy any QC failures. Develop expertise relative to equipment simulations, develop expertise relative to laboratory experimentation and evaluate the performance of analytical instruments including balances for gravimetric mass, thermal optical analyzers for carbon, x-ray fluorescence instruments for elements, and a hybrid integrating plate and sphere instrument for light absorption. Explore avenues to characterize and enhance our laboratory traceability, consistency, and accuracy. Research new instrumentation and techniques. Responsibilities include (1) design and develop quality control procedures to monitor laboratory instrument performance, (2) develop expertise relative to equipment performance and monitor the performance of laboratory instrumentation and personnel, (3) compile, graph, and summarize QC data, (4) ensure analytical instruments are calibrated and maintained on schedules, (5) lead internal audits, (6) serve as the liaison on USEPA performance evaluations and audits, (7) document QA and QC findings in reports and data advisories, (8) lead laboratory intercomparisons, (9) participate in research to characterize the quality of AQRC measurements, and (10) present findings at conferences and meetings.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Physical Sciences or Engineering including coursework in inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, statistics, and calculus, plus 5 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience making engineering judgement to plan, execute, and document work with measurement data including knowledge of and experience with quality assurance methods.
  • Experience with computer programming, including statistical and graphing software, for exploratory data analysis, such as R or Python.
  • Experience preparing detailed data summaries manuscripts for publication, and other reports.
  • Experience with mathematical and statistical concepts such as logarithms, distributions, and linear regression.
  • Ability to evaluate and implement new procedures and techniques, and to comprehend and follow detailed technical protocols and published procedures; Ability to work independently, be highly self-motivated, and meet deadlines; Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Skills to objectively review and evaluate large amounts of data/information, and synthesize it into meaningful reports and statistics to identify patterns and outliers.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience developing and implementing quality assurance methods for federal monitoring programs.
  • Experience conducting and/or participating in scientific research, knowledge of air quality and specialized knowledge and technical understanding of chemical and atmospheric processes.
  • Experience working in laboratory and field environments.
  • Familiarity with databases and Structured Query Language.

Department Overview

The UC Davis Air Quality Research Center (AQRC) is a growing interdisciplinary Organized Research Unit (ORU). Its mission is to facilitate research on the scientific, engineering, health, social, and economic aspects of gaseous and particulate atmospheric pollutants. AQRC analyzes particulate matter samples for the United States National Park Service (NPS) Interagency Monitoring for Protected Visual Environments (IMPROVE) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Chemical Speciation Network (CSN). IMPROVE was established in 1985 to monitor visibility in the National Parks and Wilderness Areas, and AQRC operates over 150 air pollution sampling sites for IMPROVE, as well as analyzes samples, processes the analysis data, and delivers data to the NPS and EPA. CSN collects samples in an urban monitoring network with over 140 sites. For CSN, AQRC analyzes samples, processes the analysis data, and delivers data to the EPA.
