The Executive Director (ED) reports directly to the Chief Marketing and Communications Officer (CMCO) and head of the Office of Strategic Communications (OSC) and is a member of the OSC leadership team. As Executive Director, acts for the CMCO in their absence, and is a confidential management position providing counsel and principal management support, leading and coordinating a variety of daily matters with OSC, between OSC and campus partners, UC leaders, and external constituents. Recognized as an influential leader, the ED advises the CMCO and develops/oversees communications plans around campus-wide and chancellor initiatives to achieve the university's strategic vision for increasing the reputation and visibility of UC Davis. Provides leadership on a variety of projects for the CMCO, many of which contain a high degree of confidentiality and privileged information requiring tact, sensitivity, independent judgment, diplomacy, discretion, and flexibility. Oversees department's executive communications and administrative teams. Works collaboratively with the Operations Manager on budget and human resources issues. With CMCO, works collaboratively with the unit directors to implement and measure communication goals and objectives. Responsible for overseeing implementation of department projects, including reporting on metrics and impacts and analysis of best practices based on metrics. Works collaboratively with numerous constituents and stakeholders throughout the Davis and Sacramento campuses. Represents the CMCO in their absence where appropriate. It is imperative that the individual in this position is a strong and effective executive level leader specialized in executing communications plans, who understands how to work with senior executives, who knows how to motivate individuals and teams for collaborative success and who promotes the mission, vision and values of the OSC.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree and 10 or more years of experience in a communications organization, with progressively more responsibility, particularly within a large, complex environment, including 5 years or more of supervisor/manager experience.
  • Leadership experience in and expert knowledge of at least one area of Strategic Communications (marketing, writing, social media, visual, web or news). Demonstrated leadership and the ability to positively influence outcomes through collaboration and partnership.
  • Experience in leading communications efforts, including managing multiple projects, and demonstrated implementation of communications and measurement. Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and effectively in person and in writing, with diverse audiences and varied constituencies to solicit constructive input, develop consensus, and cultivate constructive collaborations among multiple campus departments and community groups.
  • Demonstrated use of political acumen to navigate sensitive circumstances involving all organizational levels and confidential information. Demonstrated ability at good decision making, conflict management and relationship building. Analytical skills to make sound judgments and be accountable for decisions in a variety of complex circumstances and subjects.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply strategic planning principles; ability to design and facilitate dynamic organizational change to meet the evolving needs of the campus.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage subordinate managers and staff assigned responsibilities for producing a variety of communication pieces in a variety of digital venues. Demonstrated ability to ensure production of high quality products that effectively deliver the desired message within budget and time constraints.
  • Demonstrated commitment to issues of diversity, equity, accessibility and inclusion.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5+ years' experience in higher education or similar organization.
  • Advanced degree in a related field.
  • Experience managing financial, physical, and human resources in a large, complex organization.

Department Overview

Strategic Communications provides comprehensive and coordinated campus leadership in developing, planning, creating and implementing strategic communications programs based on the department's goals and objectives. The department works across all media to foster increased awareness, understanding and support of UC Davis' mission, vision, accomplishments, impacts and needs among its many internal and external constituencies. It serves as the official voice of UC Davis to regional, state, national and international news media. Strategic Communications encompasses six units: Visual Communications, News and Media Relations, Web Communications, Social Media, Marketing and Undergraduate Admissions Communications. Strategic Communications' multimedia storytellers, writers, social media practitioners, designers, web developers, information architects and search-engine experts have a mission to communicate university messages through interactive media. We coordinate these communications across platforms to reach our audiences. Our efforts can be seen on the ucdavis.edu, Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube and other sites and channels. Unit Specific Job Scope: The Undergraduate Admissions Communications team is responsible for creating and implementing strategies and communications to attract prospective students, supporting a unified approach to the campus's brand and identity guidelines, providing marketing communications resources and services, creating and managing communications vehicles that serve the recruitment, yield and outreach efforts of Undergraduate Admissions, and staying in touch with best practices for reaching Undergraduate Admissions' target audiences.
