Pay Rate / Range: Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience; the budget for the position; and the application of fair, equitable, and consistent pay practices at the University. The full salary range for this position is $104,900 to $198,900/year. The budgeted salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $104,900 to $110,000/year.

Learn more about the benefits of working at UC Brief Summary of Job Duties: The Assistant Director (AD) manages programs that have a critical impact upon the organization. Has significant responsibility for formulating and administering policies and programs, manages significant human, financial, and physical resources, and functions with a very high degree of autonomy. Oversees through subordinate employees the accountability and stewardship of department resources and the development of systems and procedures to protect organizational assets. Is responsible for assessing, analyzing, and implementing the mission and creative vision of the Museum as defined by the Director. Works collaboratively with the Director and is responsible for carrying out that mission by overseeing and leading department heads at the Museum to achieve stated goals. Develops and implements a roster of exhibitions and educational programs which explore issues in art, architecture and design but also relate to the broader teaching goals of the University and ensure the continued success, reach and impact of the Museum. As a scholar, educator, and advocate who is passionate about art and its role in collegiate and community life, the AD elevates the Museum's engagement with both the UCSB campus community as well as that of neighboring Goleta and Santa Barbara. As a community builder, the AD fosters a welcome, collegial, and highly collaborative environment for students, faculty, and staff, contributing to productive workflows and the flourishing of ideas. Additionally, has an adaptive leadership role, actively participating in shaping the Museum environment to advance equity and strengthen institutional capabilities. Performs duties with a demonstrated commitment to accessibility and inclusion, collaboration, and interdisciplinarity. Defines the standards for exhibitions and educational and public programs and continually reviews, interprets, and evaluates programs and objectives in light of the mission of the Museum and University. In consultation with the Director provides strategic leadership, oversight and management of multiple departments at the Museum. This involves creating and establishing policies and procedures for day-to-day museum operations and the Museum's multi-platform programs, all the while maintaining recognized professional standards. Assists the Director with overseeing and managing aspects of operations related to creative programming, collection stewardship, educational initiatives, installation and design and outreach. Is in charge of allocating and administering resources as well as managing the resultant budgets. Individual department heads report directly to this position. Required Qualifications:
- Advanced degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
- 1-3 years - Demonstrated commitment to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion in museum practice.
- 1-3 years - Experience in, and knowledge of collections stewardship/ building, exhibition development, and conservation / preservation.
- 1-3 years - Managing staff, schedules and budgets.
- 1-3 years - Curatorial experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
- PhD preferred with Specialization in Latin American or Asian American Art.
- Knowledge of curatorial practices and current trends.
- Demonstrated commitment to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion in museum practice.
- Demonstrated knowledge of managing staff, and functioning in a leadership role.
- Broad-based knowledge of organizational administration.
- Knowledge of facilities and office management.
- Knowledge of financial management and budget development.
- Solid knowledge of project management.
- Knowledge of museum programming.
- Strong knowledge of donor development.
- Knowledgeable of current issues facing the curatorial and art museum administration fields.
- Skills in scholarly research and in writing scholarly publications.
- Possess public speaking expertise.
- Ability to take a long-range approach in regard to relevant museum programming, exhibits, and strategic planning.
- Proficient in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Job Functions and Percentages of Time:
- 20% Fundraising and Program Management - Develops and implements the Mission and Creative Vision of the Museum as defined by the Director. Develops and manages the programming of the Museum, including exhibitions and educational programs. Supervises, plans and conceptualizes an exhibition program that explores diverse topics and historical themes. Establishes departmental goals and objectives. Manages financial resources including some fundraising.
- 35% Curatorial - Develops, implements, and curates exhibitions. Plays a critical role in long-range institutional planning efforts, such as establishing programmatic and collection development priorities, and exhibition planning. Envisions, plans, and budgets for exhibitions, educational programs, publications and PR. Provides direction for collections growth and cultivation and plans oversees the museum's policies around deaccessioning, and conservation priorities. Proofs and approves catalogs and other interpretive materials.
- 20% Development - Actively cultivates relationships with existing major and potential donors, collectors, foundations, and artists. With the Outreach Coordinator, ensures that the vision and strategy for educational programming is articulated, expanded and implemented. Assists the Director with activities of the Art, Design, and Architecture Museum related to development.
- 25% Administrative - Oversees through subordinate employees, the accountability and stewardship of department resources and the development of systems and procedures to protect organizational assets. Directs the collaborative efforts of those responsible for the maintenance, display, interpretation and care of the collections in accordance with the highest professional and ethical standards. Makes recommendations regarding necessary staffing and resources. Assists Director with recruiting and hiring. Supervises the Designer; Collections Manager; and PR Marketing Coordinator positions. Manages financial requests and develops budgets for projects and exhibitions. Manages department budgets and resources.
